For a little over 500 (number edited to correct math) points, what would be a good option for a pseudo-'hammer' assault unit?
For those points you can get:
4 TWC (1 normal, 1 TH, 1 SS, 1 meltabomb (for wound allocation)), along with a Wolf Lord on a mount with a WC/SS, RA and a couple of wolves.
OR
10 skyclaws, 1 with powerfist
1 wolf priest with jump pack
1 wolf lord, jump pack, WC/SS, RA.
OR ????
Any other ideas? Any thoughts on which of the above two options is stronger? Obviously the skyclaws are more dependent on getting the charge and the Wolf Priest's Oath of War, but they also get more attacks overall than the TWC squad if that happens (almost 40 on the charge for the skyclaws, not counting the HQs!!). On the other hand the TWC are +1 tougher, +1 stronger, have rending and benefit from wound allocation.

The skyclaw option is really good, I have seen it work extraordinarily well. Run the lord with a FB instead of WC and take a RunePriest w/ JP also, he helps a lot.

5 Grey hunters in a Razorback with T-L Asscannons, plus a Wolf Guard with Storm bolter and Thunder Hammer.
The grey hunters should be: 1 Wolf standard, 1 Plasma(or Melta), 1 Power Fist, 1 Mark of the Wulfen, 1 naked.
46+70+130 or 135= 256 or 261 points. Plus it is scoring.
Tactically you want to advance with the Razorback into rapid fire range, drop out pump out your 10 "Bolter" rounds plus your Plasma(or melta) Shot(s), then allow yourself to get assaulted. Hopefully(and fairly likely) you will pass your counter assault test, and then declare your Standard use, then Roll for your # of attacks with the Wulfen model(adding +1 for counter assault) and enjoy your 6(or 9) regular attacks, 1(or 2) Power Fist attacks, 2(or 3) Thunder Hammer attacks, and your D6+1(or 2) rending attacks. Best part is all your special attacks are "hidden".
This unit(and tactic) only works well for Space wolves because of the extra attacks they get in Close combat to begin with, and they get more Special Close combat weapons than standard Marines.

The only thing making me lean away from the skyclaws (besides the extra silliness of riding a wolf) is my gut feeling that the claws would have more of a problem with tough targets than the Cavalry would. I didn't run the numbers or anything, but WS 3 means whoever is fighting the claws is going to hit them a lot.
PS - What is the point of the Rune Priest? I can't figure out how he'd be more useful than a wolf priest here. Or even a wolf lord. I said, what 450 points max for this 'hammer'-ish unit, and 10 skyclaws with a powerfist use up ... 205? Wolf Priest brings that up to 330. A wolf lord can be added for a bunch of fast power weapon attacks so they have a chance against tougher units (although now that I am looking at the math again that gets over 450 points). A Rune Priest here does... what, give them a 5+ cover save?

Why not take Logan the grim and take all wolf guard as troops+ the have 2 base attacks and ws of 4 you can give them all storm bolters for 21 points a unit plus take 2 in terminator armor with assault cannons 1 with mark of the Wolfen with a power wepon. For about 319 points tell me what you think. That's how Iam running mine
Automatically Appended Next Post: Heck you can even give one a power fist take combination flammers melts ect or make them all terminators for only 33 points a terminator

The rune priest's Runic Weapon can negate enemy force powers w/in 24" on a 4+. Not so good for a an assaulty unit, but can provide great defense for you army. (Specially all them nasty BA armies w/ there Cool psychic powers).

Why on earth would you pay 15 points to make all attacks rending and then pay 15 more points to buy a power weapon that can Never be used?

500 points?
Wolf Lord + Bloodclaws out of LR Crusader. Good or better assault range than the Skyclaws and a little LR goodness for your opponent to deal with.
-or-
9 Wolfguard base with SB & CCW. That is 4 attacks each on a charge/countercharge for 162 points. If you want assaulty put them in a LR and have about 90 points for claws, or whatever equipment you favor,
-or-
35 for a rhino and 300+ for a space wolf leader and power weapons or whatever for your wolfguard.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned tooled out Terminators, 500 points is a fair bit to work with.
Or you could take a pair of Wolf Lords on Thunderwolves, they can really mess some stuff up. As cover, take an Iron priest with cyber wolves to act as a cheapish screen.

You know, that never even crossed my mind. To get 4 on the charge they have to be in the standard bolt pistol / close combat weapon combo rather than the storm bolter, which is what your math shows...

I much prefer TWC over Sky Claws.
Hell, you could get 10 thunder-wolves for 500pts! 10!
Personally, my preferred load-out for TWC is:
- 1 w/ Thunder Hammer
- 1 w/ Storm Shield
- 1 w/ Meltabomb
- 1 Naked.
= 265pts.
You could get two of these squads for what you're asking, and trust me, that'd be freakin' nasty!
You may also wish to consider:
- Thunder Wolf Lords - about 200pts each, attack to Fenrisian Wolves for some protection. Always use protection kiddies!
- Wolf Guard - The average wolf Guard termie costs 33pts. You can get A LOT of bang for your buck at 500pts expenditure.
- Iron Priest - On a thunderwolf with 4x Cyber wolves = 150ish points. You could get 3 of these bad boys.
- Landraider/Wolf Priest/Blood Claws. In a Redeemer they come to about 540pts with:
- Wolf Priest
- 10x Blood Claws. 1x Powerfist
- Land Raider Redeemer.
- Nasty vehicles. 3 vindicators will ruin anyone's day. 3 Dreadnoughts is also brutal.
Just some suggestions, hope they help.
