Hi everyone,

I need some wisdom, advice or poking..

I'm 24 and have been playing warhammer for 12.5 years of that 40K for about 11. I picked up some warmachine about 2 years ago (about 40pts worth) since my local irish gaming club played it and it looked fun. (It was! - progess here)

I have Lizardmen (first and primary GW army), Woodelves, Necrons and Tyranids. Few marines knocking around somewhere. Various dabbles with other things - EG I have lots of night goblins intending to start up a 'fun army', a mordheim band and gorkamorka stuff somewhere too. Would have liked to have done slaneeshi chaos for 40k or fantasy or khainate dark elves at some point too..

Uni seen a decline in wargaming but I still painted the odd mini. Then I graduated moved home (to ireland) and resumed a bit of playing at my gaming club. Then & got a job and moved to the UK as that was where my future wife lived. I took my woodelves as they most transportable although I love Lizards more and my cryx since its small. An order of Tau arrrived at my new house the day I arrived w/ codex :-)

Now the tau is not painted and didn't advance very much. I had 1 game of fantasy 7th edition in the UK on a 4x4 GW table vs a 6 unit slaaneshi cheese (with bloodcrushers -what the ¢ƒ∑$§2!?) that murdered me and I haven't had a game of fantasy since as it made me sick to be quite frank. There seems little point of playing a fast army with lots of core units if the tables are so small my army cannot move removing its biggest strength - maneouverability!

Since then I've gotten married (yay) and have moved to a city with a GW battle bunker and a warmachine group and now have time to have a hobby again as well as space and an environment conducive to painting. It was decided that it would be good for me to have 'man-geek time' To this end wargaming seemed good again.

But this leaves me in a pickle - my dilemma is 2 fold:

1) of the 2 painted armies in the country I have rules for none (cryx, wood elves)

2) the army I have rules for is not painted (not good for GW play!)

3) I'm not sure I like the notion of £45 for a lugging rulebook, an edition where my WE are naff (and GW 4x4 tables have no flanks..) and where it seems that I will need to buy more minis to make units bigger and get 'good units' (ie the ones that didn't sell well last edition - treekin and eternal guard - although I have home made treekin..)

4) I think I would rather spend £45 on Warmachine rulebook + dec and a solo or 2 but its not as prolific and games are harder to come by (No FLGS)

It's difficult really - give into GW extortion to use an army I don't want to use (would much rather use my lizzis or go chaos* I think - not that I can afford to ship my army or buy a new one) paint massively or go for a game that's good, but not as widespread as WFB/40K and where I might have to 'invest' more. I dont know how 3000pt armies will work on gw 4x4 tables with no flanks (pro tip - beat the GW kiddies at tournies by utilising the extra 1' each side that they've never seen in their life!)

I'm wondering if I should wait and pick up one of the small books from flea-bay but I dont know when they're out or how much they'll be. Should I build my own table (3x 2'x4' strips painted green..) and try to find opponents? I'm really unsure about all of this!

Input or ideas would be appreciated, thanks :-)

My first instinct is to say that you perhaps need to decide which game appeals to you most at the moment, and flop down on that side of the fence!

If you truly cannot decide (although it looks to me like you are having reservations about WFB, so you may have made up your mind already!) then I wuld advise giving WM a go.

My reasons are that from what you have said (which is all the information about your life I have!) then it seems the WM option is more flexible. You aren't tied to a store where you have to play with "official" miniatures and the like, as you are with the GW store - where, IIRC, you are required to own a copy of the rulebook and army book before you can play. That means you are more likely to be able to turn up and borrow stuff for a game or two, just to see if you like it. If you don't, then no harm done, and you move on. Your options for "try before you buy" WFB gaming seems more limited. Maybe you could turn up with your WE's and see if one of the staffers could run you through a game to see how things are truly affecting your army, but whether or not that would be much use depends on the Blue Shirts and how human they are in your new location.

Personally I''d trawl the net for an independent gaming club operating in your neck of the woods (try the GCN website for starters, and Google if that fails). With an independent gaming club you can just rock up and chill out for a couple of weeks until you see how things lie. You'd at least very likely be able to get a try at WFB with your woodies without having to fork out for a copy of the rulebooks straight off. You also may come across another, as yet unguessed, third options - such as Uncharted Seas, Secrets of the Third Reich, Armies of Arcana, or something, that blows WFB or WM out the water for you!

Good luck, and good hunting!

A quick Google found these guys:

There are also a couple of other clubs listed under Hampshire that may be accessible here:

Your nearest GCN club seems to be Solent Wargamers in Portsmouth: http://www.gamingclubnetwork.org/modules/clubs/

I'm not sure of your travel arrangements, so these may or may not be of use.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Yes, take Osbad's advice an join a local club.

They usually let people play games without having and army.

You can decide if you want to do 40K, WHFB, Warmachine or something else like Ancients or WW2.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
