I’m torn about the new minis coming out in October. Dangit! My local game store is starting a WHFB slow grow league on August 1st and I had decided to play High Elves. I was debating between High Elves and Wood Elves and had decided on High Elves. The slow grow league begins the 1st of each month and the points are in increments of 750pts per month. For August I need 750pts and by September 1st I need 1500 and so on. That means that by the time the new models come out in October I would have already had to buy 2250pts worth of models. I’m really torn and cannot decide what to do. I really wanted to play a HE army in this slow grow league. Any suggestions?

So just play HE anyway? When the new models out, if you really want them you can mix them with the now out of production ones you will have.

**before the new starter box**
Well, right now you can purchase the box set for $90 and have a good number of points. The spear men in the Unit box and box set have the option for Sea Guard which are the optimal core unit for the army. Archers are also a good core unit and the silver helms are ok.

Buy a cool HQ if you want or another box of spearmen and you should be set on 750 points.

**After the new starter box**
Buy a box and trade the skaven to a friend for the elves. You will get 20 seaguard and 20 swordsman a pair of griffon hq's and some reavers.
Also two mages

After septermber 4th, you will have around 2000 points of elves

**october release**

The only thing you may want to wait for in October is plastic swordsman and maybe some dragon princes. Nothing to fancy IMHO about the new modules, just plastic versions.

So by September 4th you can have:

16 Seaguard + 16 extra seaguard if you buy the spearmen box + 20 Real sea guard modules from starter set
16 archers+ 20 archers from start set
8 silver helms + some reavers
1 bolt thrower
2 griffins from starter box
20 Sword masters

A total of (without command or magic) and before the october release
52 seaguard -676 points
36 archers- 395 points
20 sword masters - 300 points
Reavers w/ bows- 105
Silver helms- 184
a bolt thrower- 100
two mages- 200-400 points
two griffons w/ nobles- 700 naked (u can only take 1 lord over 2000 so the 2nd griffon can be traded for useful stuffs)

total - 2100 with out any command upgrades or upgrades on the Hq's and elites. Easily worth 2250

I think Liquidice has some sound advice. I'm in a similar position, although without the expansion league (which does complicate things somewhat).

It might make sense to buy a box or two now to meet the league's requirements and start filling out your army. I don't think you'll regret this, as the way fantasy is going games are getting larger and in the long run a bigger pool of units will be beneficial. I'm fairly certain the new starter box comes out in September, by the way, so you have less time to wait until you can add those models to your army.

The only downside of this is that you might eventually find out you have some units you don't take as often, but I am willing to chalk that up as part of the hobby. If you're looking to be frugal (and clearly you're not, since you're playing a GW game) then I think you sit out the league and wait for the starter box. But even then, you're going to have to add units to the starter box to play larger games, so I'd say start building now.

My group primarily plays 40k, but we're getting a bunch of new Fantasy players as 8th edition launches (including me). Our local game store doesn't have much of a selection, but I picked up two boxes of High Elf spearmen and a hero the other day. I'm hearing a lot of bad things about spearmen and it's possible I won't end up using them as much down the road, but I'd rather get started filling out my army a bit at a time than feel completely overwhelmed when the new models arrive.

I'm also in the same position, if they come out October time, then it is probbly worth picking up smaller pieces (spearmen, heroes, etc) and getting the box later. Sell the Skaven, get more high elves. You won't have to use all the models you get immediately, and can add them in as you get to the points limit. Basically, as above.

Pretre: OOOOHHHHH snap. That's like driving away from hitting a pedestrian.
Pacific:First person to Photoshop a GW store into the streets of Kabul wins the thread.
Selym: "Be true to thyself, play Chaos" - Jesus, Daemon Prince of Cegorach.
H.B.M.C: You can't lobotomise someone twice.

I'm glad to see the advice. I think I will take it and go with HE as I had planned. I do like Elves and at this point feel like as a new player I'll do better using them then Wood Elves. I've played 8th ed using a Woodie army (and even won) but I feel in subsequent games as more people get to playing 8th ed the Woodies will be a higher learning curve as a newbie. I think I'll make them my 2nd or 3rd army and stick with HE.

Thanks for all the advice. Just what I was hoping for.

Question, are HE actually scheduled to be released in October? Or is this all speculation?
I'm genuinely interested lol, cause I was thinking of starting a pointy eared army.

Oh and from what I can gather, the releases will be plastic Phoenix Guard, White Lions, Dragon Princes and a new battalion, is this also correct?

High Elves: 1500pts Wins: 0 Draws: 1 Losses: 3
Kill Team: Under construction
1250pts: Wins: 1

They are, GW sent out their newsletter email which confirmed it.

Not sure what the releases will be though, that part is still mostly speculation.

I can see wanting to do the escalation league, my imho it'd be unwise to do it with HE. A lot of the models you'd be buying will be OOP by the end of the year!!! It sounds like there will be kits for plastic white lions, phoenix guard, and dragon princes, along with the excellent plastic swordmasters and lothern sea guard in the starter set. That's basically new models for the whole army's best units, if you use LSG for your core (and they're a good choice, too!).

So I'd wait on high elves, and go for a different army if you want to start one for the escalation league. You could make HE your second army, and start something else now... imho that'd be the way to do it.
