So my buddy runs an ork army, and has a good smattering of just about everything. The only things he doesn't have are Kans or a Dread.

As a birthday gift, I was thinking of getting him either, but I'm no ork expert. As a new player that has pretty much every unit from the base dex, what should I get him to round out his army as far as a balanced choice for any army he might face. We have guard, nids, eldar, SM and CSM in our little play group, so he'll see alot of different stuff.

Opinions?

Kans are very much superior to Dreads.

1)You can get 2 kans with 1 less armor save for the price of 1 Dread
2)Init is the same - yuo swing after your opponent unless they have a power fist.
3)Not much difference btw AV 11 and AV 12
4)The dread's extra CC attacks are wasted because it will get shot before it gets to CC.
5)Kans have BS 3 - the best shooting in the Codex for orks
6)Kans can take Grotzookas!

Ya, Vraff is pretty much spot on. Dreads are typically fire magnets while you rush them forward to get in cc. IF, that's a big IF, they get into cc with non special infantry, they are going to eat lunch, but good luck getting them that far.

I've found Kans to much more flexible in terms of usefulness. And yes, grotzookas are great! Plus they are good at cc against non special infantry as well if you feel so inclined. And you can spread 3 out to provide cover for squad behind them. Try hiding 30 boys behind one dread

Depends on if your friend is more for the unites look or the unite's effectiveness. Cause honestly, Kans are better than Dreads in four out of five cases, but Dreads just look that much more awesome!

Time ta make sometin' fun!

Yeah, as far as effectiveness Kans have it in spades over dreads, they address a weakness of the army (Shooting) and with their low initiative, Dreads have a large chance of getting pantsed by any other heavy hitter before they get to swing.
