The Setup:Marines have a tower in the center of their side and a ruined bunker to the right. There are Ruins just before the Bunker and ruins closer to the marine board edge. The Orks have a ruined bunker on their middle right. Playing on the realm of battle game board, with all hills to the outside of the four corners.

Marines win roll off. They choose to set up first.

Marines set up with the Rhino just to the left of the tower, and the LRC to the right. The LSS deploys to the left of the Rhino, as far out as it can go.The two Preds are on either side or the ruins close to the board edge, and the Devastators are on the Right side hill in the marine deployment zone. There are 3 Drop Pods in reserve. The two Dread Pods will be making the Drop Pod Assault.

The Orks (from the Marine perspective, left to right, set up) Lootas deploy in the ruined bunker. Then there are a Trukk full of boys, KFF Wagon, Ghazzy Wagon, Truk full of boys, Lootas beside the trukk line. A Trukk is set up behind the front line, turned sideways, and hugging the back of the KFF Wagon.

LSS Scouts 24" towards Lootas
Orks Fail to sieze.

Turn 1 Marines
Movement: Drop Pod containing the regular Dreadnaught takes a ballsy drop behind the ork line. It sticks just behind the outside trukk on the Marine Right. The Drop Pod containing the Ironclad Dread drops in just in front of the far right Trukk and sticks. Dreads deploy. The LSS moves 12" towards Lootas and unloads Scouts.
Shooting: Rhino fires at the Trukk on the left, and misses. The Dreadnought behind the Trukks fires his Multi Melta at Ghazzy's wagon, and it fails the KFF save and explodes. The Ironclad Dread fires his Heavy Flamer and Meltagun at the Trukk he is in front of, and it fails the KFF save and explodes. LSS tries to keep the explosions rollin, but misses. Scouts miss the lootas with the Bolt Pistols. Predator shoots at the Lootas on the right side, they take 2 casualties, and fail morale. The LRC shoots at KFF wagon, and cause damage, but the KFF works this time. The other Predator fires on the Trukk behind the others and explodes it, causing it to kareen to the edge of the board, close to the scouts and the LSS. Devastators fire all frag shots into the exposed orks and kill all of the Trukk squad but the nob and 2 orks.
Assault: Scouts assault the Lootas and kill them, while taking one casualty.
Turn 1 Orks
Movement: Ghazzy breaks off from the burnas, and moves towards the Dread behind Ork lines. KFF wagon rams the Ironclad and his Drop Pod, hitting the pod first. It explodes, and the Ironclad whiffs on its Death or Glory with his Seismic Hammer, and in return loses both weapons and is immobilized...but still in the fight. The boys unload from this wagon, and the burnas all jump in. The lone Trukk left moves up beside the KFF wagon, both side armors are exposed to the marines. The boys that kareened move towards the scouts and LSS. The Nob and his two boys move in on the Dread's Drop Pod.
Shooting: The boys shoot at the Scouts...and whiff.
Assault: Ghazzy assaults the Dread, takes one wound, and turns the Dread into a nice piece of modern art and consolidates towards the KFF wagon. The Boys that unloaded from the KFF wagon assault the Ironclad, and take one casualty for their trouble. The Nob and his boys make short work of the Drop Pod in the back field. The boys assault the Scouts and LSS. The LSS explodes, and the boys kill the scouts. The five remaining boys pile into the ruined bunker.
Marines 5 Orks 5 (kind of misleading because the ork casualties are much worse than the marines)
Turn 2 Marines No reserves
Movement: Being well out of assault range, even if he calls a Waaugh!, the marines don't move, so they can fire all of their guns(and completley forget about the outflanking Koptas))
Shooting: The Rhino squad misses again. the LRC fires everything it has into the side of the KFF wagon, and a Rending shot from the Assault Cannon gets the job done due to another failed KFF save. (Ghazzy gets pissed because this is his second ride in one day that has exploded, and the poor burnas are really becoming afraid of vehicles.) Both Preds focus on the other Trukk, and get it to explode. Just to keep count...the Burnas have weathered every explosion other than the Trukk that Kareened off towards the edge of the board. The Devastators have some more fun with Frag Rockets and finish off the burnas, and kill some other boys due to scatter. The KFF Mek, who was attached to the Burnas, runs for the border(but doesn't make it...boo)
Assault: Nope
Turn 2 OrksAll the reserves come in...uh oh...cause Koptas come in on the side by my oh so vulnerable Predators. Also, he calls a Waaugh!.(I think)
Movement: Ghazzy moves towards Ironclad. The Nob and his boy (only one now) start a long journey towards my Devs on the hill. Koptas move in 12" towards the Preds. The boys in the ruined bunker stay put. And the Boys from the last Trukk explosion move toward the Rhino. Mek rallies with the Gretchin that come in.
Shoot: Boys Fleet towards Rhino. Nob and Boy Fleet toward ruined bunker at bottom of hill. Kopta Squad 1 fires at one of my preds, and Kopta Squad 2 fires at the other. Squad 2 immobilizes the Pred, but otherwise nothing.
Assault: Boys Squad and Ghazzy finish off the Ironclad and consolidate towards my line, and into some cover. Kopta Squad 1 assaults into my Pred, and makes it go boom, hitting my Devs, and causing one casualty. The other Kopta Squad falls short of the assault.
Turn 3 MarinesPod comes in!
Movement: Drop Pod drops by ruined bunker. Rhino moves forward towards boys. LRC turns towards Koptas.
Shoot: Pod squad fires flamer, and double taps with boltguns and remove the bunker boys. Rhino flames and shoots boys, and kill quite a bit of them...they stay put thanks to the bosspole. LRC, Preds, and Dev squad fire at the Koptas...when the smoke clears, there is one Kopta left, with 1 wound on him...don't know how it happened.
Turn 3 Ork
Movement: Ghazzy and boys move forward, only a small amount due to Ghazzy. Nob and his Boy make for the Devs, Gretchin move towards the Pod Squad.
Shoot: Ghazzy pumps his Big Shoota into the Devs, and offs his ammo runt...nothing happens. Gretchin shoot at Pod Squad...apparently the ML guy wasn't paying attention cause he catches a sharp case of death.
Turn 4
Everything but Ghazzy gets shot off of the board. Ghazzy moves toward the LRC and calls out the Chaplain and the Terminator retinue. With a defiant growl, he lowers his horns and charges forward.
Turn 5 Ghazzy VS the WORLD!!!
The Chaplain and his Terminators disembark from the Crusader. The lone Greenskin charging toward them, the Chaplain orders all squads to fire on the War Boss. Ghazzy, seemingly possessed by a second Waaaugh!, charges through bolter, missile, cannon, and melta...no wounds. His army has been brought low by the Emperors might, and he is pissed. Seeing what must be done, the Chaplain begins reciting the ancient battle rites as him and the Terminators charge to meet this Greenskin beast, as mere tanks cannot bring him down. The wicked Lightning Claws of the Terminator Squad, and the Chaplain's own Crozius Arcanum bring the horrid War Boss down before the might Thunder Hammers can be brought to bear. The Orks have been tabled!

My first Battle Report. Please be gentle with the c&c, but it is welcome!

I am okay with batreps not having pix as long as the report fills in enough details. It's not always practical to have a camera on hand. I have read plenty of great reports here that had no pictures.

Good batrep, I liked the little piece of fluff at the end a lot. Pictures would make this batrep even better, but this was fine even without them.

Thanks all. Actually pics would be bad, as my army is mostly grey right now, but I am working on it! I really like pics, though, so that is the next step. Pics really help draw people into a battle, rather than just reading it. Epic shooting, i don't think, really describes how it happened. Though, I don't know any other way to say it. His Mek must have forgotten to turn the KFF on, or something. This is how our battles seem to go, though. Somebody just gets curb stomped(like me in our last battle). Otherwise, my army just panned out like it was supposed to. I thought it was gonna go south when I forgot about his Koptas, and he got em both on turn 2. He also thinks he should have used his Gretchin as a screen for my pods, and I agree. He knows my general strategy as we play each other quite alot. This could have really changed the pace of things.

Definitely go out and play new people. It will greatly improve your game. Me and a buddy who got in at the same time played each other waaaaaaaay too much.

Lol, ya, I know what ya mean. We are working on getting into a semi local game scene. I used to play MtG, and the philosophy of playing other people definately carries over across the two games. Portsmouth Ohio isn't the greatest area for 40k, but there are several places that play, that are only about two hours away.

My butt still hurts from this reaming

Like nantuko said, my KFF mek must've just decided to take the night off. I guess it's fitting though, in our last battle I failed one KFF save that caused the loss of a Big Shoota on a BW, this time, I made one, not that it mattered.

I think that if I would have utilised my gretchin as a screen, things would have gone differently. I thought, "Hold them in reserve, don't give him an easy killpoint!" and instead, the first turn I lost 3 out of 5 vehicles.

Also, those marines must have been packing thermite tipped nukes on their weapons, all of my vehicles went from fine, to exploded. As nantuko touched on, I think my burnas may not want to get into a wagon next game, since both of their rides evaporated around them, and they took damage from 4 out of the 5 explosions.

I think, almost more than that though, losing both squads of lootas on the first turn was a real pain in the rear. I didn't get a chance to shoot at the rhino or take pot shots at his devastators.

The one thing he failed to mention was the fate of the lone deffkopta that survived the hail of bullets on his 3rd shooting phase. In my 3rd turn, it shot and immobilised the predator that was in front of it and then assaulted in. Three automatic S 7 hits against AV 10 later, things were looking up, until I rolled my penetration dice of 1,1,2

Well, with our newly refined lists, we are 1 and 1, so I guess we'll have to try to meet up again (maybe this weekend?) and settle it once and for all! (Look for pictures next time!)

Thanks for reading and your comments everyone.

Zatchmo, I know what you mean to have a character take the night off. I have had too many occasions where Vulkan He'stan decides to take the night off and miss about every twin linked melta. I once missed in a row.

Just to clarify, you guys are not tailoring lists against each other? Me and my buddy used to but now I just reach for my Vulkan list anytime I want to play fairly competitive.

pdawg:

I'm not tailoring my list to him and I know he's not tailoring his to me. We actually had a discussion about that the last time we played. He told me that when he would write lists before, when he knew he would be playing me, that he would intentionally take ork hunting goodies (flamers, blast markers and such), whereas now we have built our lists and plan on using them as "all-comers" lists. We have a buddy that plays Tau, one who plays CSM, and another who plays 'Nids (when he plays). So, with minor tweaks here and there, these are the lists that we plan on running against all of our buddies or what we would play at a tourney (if we can ever make it to one).

Yup, Zatchmo has it correct. It is kinda hard to not tailor to him, because I used to write my list up right before we played. I would realize what I was doing, and then over correct it, and make choices that I wouldn't normally make. That is why I have been so active in the Tactics thread. I am getting opinions of vet players, and I made my list without having a game in mind. Then I used it. It worked against orks. I wanna play it against the others, and see how it fares, that way I can make adjustments when I see what kind of weaknesses it has(and I know there are many).

@Zatchmo: Sorry I missed the Heroic Fail of the shooting at the Kopta. It was getting kinda fuzzy, cause you know how well I did taking notes...
How did you like the Ghazzy bit at the end? I tried to paint it up to be as epic as it was for him. He is quite a mighty greenskin. This weekend sounds good, btw. Just lemme know.

Having lots of blast markers and templates is handy no matter what army your playing against. In my standard list I pack 2 S10 ordinance blasts, 6 templates, and 2 RL's for popping transports or fragging hordes. It's not the absolute most I could pack but it can make hordes cry along with the bolter fire. The list also has some melta for some twin linked vulkan goodness!

My devs fired at infantry the whole game. It was nice to land 14-16 hits on average with the blast markers. All of my other shooting was able to open the vehiclse up, and the Devs were able to play with the squishy green skin. The flamers did quite nicely also. I don't really have an abundance of flamers, but those that I have paid for themselves.

Yeah, the Devs and the TFC are quite similar in the way things panned out. The Devs are 50pts more, but they can also fire Krak missiles. I could see where the TFC could come in handy though.
