It occurs to me as a guy who loves to shoot things, that games like battlefield 1942 (and all their wonderfull mods) and star wars battlefront are a hell of a lot of fun. So on my many ponderings I began to consider what a well-executed 40k battleground game would be like. Hmm...

-Choose the System / Planet / planet type: Hive world, death world etc. / level of terrain danger: Toxic sumps, plants that eat you, hostile fauna, crazy daemon world badness...

-Choose the style of play/mission: Meat grinder, assault defences etc. Even stealthy kill team missions maybe.

-Choose your opponent/s you would like to fight and what forces they are using. Probably there paint scheme too. Maybe even the way they fight? (Multiple AI types)

-Choose your army/forces/make paint scheme/ and then you choose what you want to spawn in as in your army and let the computer take over the rest.

Now as I come out of my stupor I realize I'm drooling and I wonder why they don't cash in on this most likely highly profitable avenue.

So if anybody else thinks this is a great idea say so and if you think of more stuff that could be crammed into this beautiful monstrosity lets hear it! Maybe we'll all rally together and petition this into happening.

The main problem with getting a great 40k video game is simple: Its hard to make a good video game.

If it was as easy as saying: "let's make a great game with these features", then every video game released would be fabulous and (hopefully) sell millions. Instead, the vast majority are crap and only a very few are truly successful. However those few blockbusters are enough to keep the video game industry way in the black.

The point is, it costs tens of millions and years to make a video game. You have to find a talented team that is really into the project AND they have to hit the right notes between gameplay, graphics and theme.

That can be a difficult prospect and GW has (as we all wellk know) liscensed their games out to a variety of different developers with a myriad of results (most of them on the low end of the scale).

Luckily Dawn of War (the most recent GW game) has sold quite well, so at least game companies know that its not the background/theme of 40k that's been holding back the titles from selling.

With any luck, some big developers (like EA) will finally decide they want to make a game with GW and things will happen. If that occurs I think we could finally see some great 40k FPS (I don't count Fire Warrior as *great*. Passable maybe, but not great).

For my own personal tastes, I wouldn't mind a quality FPS, but I'd really like a pure turn-based version of 40k that I could play on a computer/console. I know GW will never let it happen, but if they did, I would absolutely love it. Something similar to Advance Wars for gameboy. Simple, strategic, and addicting. That's what I want.

I've wanted that for years too.

I believe there was a fan based version of Bloodbowl (simple rules and played on a small grid), but 40K is vastly more complicated.

Part of the issue is that 40K is rather buggy and inconsistencies need to be ironed out as the game progresses. Making a definitive version for a computer game and having it deal with the weird ways movement, psychic powers, shooting and wargear interact with each other would be a nightmare to program.

That's the reason why most games have very limited options - 7 classes and 8 races in WoW with repetitive abilities, a couple of character types in BF, no more than a half a dozen classes in most CRPG's. The more options there are, the more the programming load increases exponentially.

I actually think a neat idea would be a 40k RPG. The only way I could see this getting pulled off is make it from the perspective of an Inquisitor and the characters you acquire along the way form his personal retinue. The plot could consist of something adventurous that would have the inquisitor chasing around heretics/witches/xenos across a system to different planets. Along the way you could interact with a marine chapter and get temporary PC marines just to say "hey, I played as a marine! Sweet!" and then the story continues on it's way. Different weapons could be available ala Adeptus Mechanicus supply depots or shops as they would never deny access to an Inquisitor. And think of the cool easter eggs you could hide in the backround along the way.

But, that's just my two pennies.

Ah yes. Having many fond memories of Final Liberation and (though it was absolutely FULL of bugs) Chaos Gate. Wasn't too impressed with that eldar game (who's name escapes me) though.

I never got Rites of War, but I always wanted to. I loved
Panzer General 2, so the beer + pretzels approach to
wargaming was very appealing to me.

Well what was the General Consensus on Fire Warrior? I loved the game but never finished it, as I'm not very good at video games, and even on easy the Dreadnought was WAY beyond my skill level to beat.

It was alright. Not groundbreaking... but it didn't suck.

I guess you could use that to describe the game as a whole. It didn't suck.

Fire warrior was ok. Basically you enjoyed it if you were a GW fan, but it didn't increase the 40k universe fan base. The first and only GW computer game to do that is Dawn of War. DoW is generally considered the current cream of the RTS crop, and many hard core RTS gamers love it, despite having no knowledge of 40k or GW.

My biggest complaint about fire warrior is that the weapons didn't match tabletop performance. You were better off picking up lasguns, autoguns, and bolters since they outdamaged all of the tau weapons by a large margin.

The story line was pretty decent, and the novel is probably one of the better ones put out.

BTW, the way to beat the dread is to blow off its arms. The missile launcher does help, but even normal weapons can be used against it. He doesn't track very well and does have to "reload" every now and then, so just sit tight behind pillars whenever he's firing. You'll encounter one or two more dreads later on when entering the pit near the end, so keep that in mind.

As to the OP, yeah, would love to see a fps 40K style. Agree with most of what Yakface said though, so someone like EA would be the best bet for a good title. As much as that sticks in the stomach.

I can see it happening eventually, Firewarrior was passable, I sorta enjoyed it. Something done well, would be awesome.

The problem with the EA approach is that it will simply be CoD in SPAAAACCCCE! In other words a conservative missed opportunity.

40K doesn't really lend itself well to FPS games, obviously a 40K FPS could be made, and indeed has, but it doesn't live up to the strengths of the setting.

An RPG would be more fitting. Personally I would love to see either a Necromunda squad based game or a Sins style space game.

Given the success of the most recent game franchises further games based on GW's IP are all but a certainty.
