Subject: Ork list for taking on Mech armies

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and new to 40k. I've bought myself an Ork army, basically the Black Reach set (assembled) and the Megaforce box, plus a Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun and a Deffdread. The majority of these aren't built yet though. I'm part of a group of friends starting, or restarting, 40k. The armies I'm up against within the group are Orks x2 (probably mech and horde), Chaos Marines, Space Marines, Eldar and Tau. The majority of my games so far have been against my significant other, who's fielding a mech Chaos Marine army, can't remember the details but it includes a Demon Prince (winged), 3 Rhinos, 1 with Berserker squad, 1 with Marines with captain and some flamers, 1 with Marines, and a Defiler (who has a large template weapon, a small template, and a close combat arm). We have an in house rule of no special characters. My list was: Warboss with Power Klaw and TL Shoota 5 Lootas 5 Nobz all with Power Klaws and TL Shootas in a Trukk armed with a Rokkit Launcher 30 Boyz with 3 Rokkit Launchers, 1 Nob with Power Klaw and Bosspole 1 Deffkopters with TL Rokkits 2 Deffkopters with TL Rokkits 5 Warbikers I made this out to be short 35 points from my 1k total, so added a standard Big Mek because I could (I've realised this was a mistake though). I just can't seem to actually hurt his Rhinos though, and I'm worried this is going to become a consistent theme against both the Ork and Space Marine mech armies too. Some pointers on building a list would be appreciated (we will also be playing 1500 point armies). Edit: I'm happy to buy more units

KFF Mek would be better than Warboss. Your Nobz are way overcosted. 5x PK is uber-overkill. Try: Painboy, PK Waaagh Banner, Big Choppa Bosspole, Big Choppa, Vanilla. All w/ Cybork bodies. Trade out that Rokkit for a Boarding Plank 2x5 or none Lootas would be much better. Your boyz don't need Rokkit Launchas; you will never hit anything. Run 2x12 and put them in Trukks with Boarding Planks, RPJ, Ram. Just run two deffkoptas but give them both buzzsaws and Rokkits. Drop the warbikers.

My luck so far on dice rolls is poor, hence the 5 PKs. Even with those, they only managed to shake the Rhino they charged.. then were completely wiped out by it's crew in the next turn.

5 non diversified nobz with no extra armor have little to no survivability.
How much do you know about wound allocation?
Each Deffkopta with a Buzzsaw has a 60% chance of wrecking/exploding a Rhino if you get first turn. I highly recommend using three of them in 1000pts.

I read that section in the rule book, and understand that it can be abused, but not entirely sure how. If my 5 nobz take 10 unsaved wounds, then surely each gets 2 wounds allocated? Even if they're carrying different gear. Edit: Re-reading the rules has clarified the situation somewhat. It's the possible saves, not the failed ones which do the manipulating. Nothing will help me if I fail them all, but if I get some saves I can potentially have more models left on the table by allocating carefully.

Correct, that's why 5 diversified nobz are more powerful than 5 PK nobz. You need to take 6 unsaved wounds to lose one model rather than 2.
