The Apoc Formation (released on the GW site in .pdf) "Storm Trooper Strike Force" looks to be a great time in Apoc. The formation states that you need 3+ Valkyrie Assault Carriers. My question is: can I also use 3+ Vendettas? Vendettas and Valkyries are both in the same entry in the IG codex with the Vendetta being a Valkyrie Variant with a lascannon payload.

(Also I intend to talk to my opponent anyway, I'm asking YMDC for their opinions/arguements/cheeze rating... not to be told to go talk to my opponent.)

I've been wanting to ask this question so I'm glad I'm not the first curious person. I can't say what the 100% correct answer is since ultimately it’s up to you and your opponent. But here is my argument in favor of allowing Vendettas to be used instead of Valkyries.

"The Valkyrie can be outfitted with a wide variety of weapon payloads, one of which is dubbed the Vendetta." (IG: page 56)

By that description it's the same vehicle, just with a different name and weapon build (but it's "Fluff").

However since there is a Valkyrie Squadron, and a Vendetta Squadron (which can't mix), it doesn't speak well of my fluff argument.

you cannot fly a mix of assault carriers and vendettas in the same squadron - they are actually 2 different unit types.. check the unit compisitions at the back of the codex (dont have the page ref# as i am at work - i have looked at this previously)

and the strike force rules specifies assualt carriers so unfortunately vendettas cannot be substituted in - if it had just said Valkyries with no varient mentioned then you could

No, even if it had just said Valkyries then you still could not.

Valkyries and Vendettas have separate armylist entries, separate stat lines, separate everything. They are only related by fluff.

It's not like predators where there's one entry and you upgrade to an annihilator.

Look at the Black Templar codex, the predator is broken down into 2 seperate entries with 2 seperate stat lines.

Yea, but that's like saying all the Leman Russ Variants are not all Leman Russ. They each have their own sections in the back of the book, as do the Hellhounds, Basilisks, and pretty much every vehicle in our codex. But ultimately, the birds are the same vehicle, and have the same purpose... just with different weapons (seriously, that's the ONLY difference) and they are both under the "Valkyrie Assault Carrier" entry in the book, just separated in the back (which honestly idk why they bothered since you could have just said "swap out the weapons for lascannon" for 30 pts)

its apocalypse... nobody should have a problem with you swapping a very similar unit for another. (not similar in weaponry, but in purpose / type).

Apocalypse breaks if you aren't willing to just play for fun, and IMO there is no reason you can't use vendettas for the role instead of valks.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

I believe one is a valkyrie assualt carrier and the other is a valkyrie vendetta.

Again if it just said valkyrie I would say no problems, but because it specifies assault carrier I would have to say no.

You opponent may be fine with it but as it would not be RAW.

If I was using it to deliver storm troopers for a strike I would probably go with multiple rocket pods anyway.. The ability to move 12" fire the maingun and both pods. Once the ST's have been dropped off use the valks to hunt infantry formations.

For anti-armour maybe put melta's as your special weapons choices in the sqauds.

2 ST's with melta's and bs 4 in each squad delivered within 6 inches of the target armour should get the job done.
