I want to try this combo out. I think it could be very destructive and effective with my Lvl 4 Great Bray Shaman.
Take a Lvl 2 Bray Shaman with Skin of man, shadow-hide, and the 5+ ward Save from the BRB....That is a scouting shaman with a 5+ ward, -1 to hit in cover. Roll the Lvl 4 spells in the lore of death 1st, exchange purple if rolled. The lvl 2 has a very high chance at purple sun and will be 12 inches away from the enemy. He will be 160 points total, but with the a potential 1st turn, and throw 6 dice at the spell, he could destroy a large chunk of the enemy forces.
What do you guys think? viable? waste of time?

It might work every now and then. But there will be the times...
You dont go first and he eats a cannonball to the face and dies.
He gets shot to death and dies.
He doesnt roll double 6's and it get scrolled, see above.
He doesnt roll double 6's and doesnt meet the casting value, see 1 and 2.
You are up against lizardmen with becalming cognition and you are forced to ignore 6's.
Your dice flop and you dont even get the spell.
To many way for it to go wrong for the occasional time it would go right.

Remains in play spells can be dispelled on the enemy's turn. He would just need a 15+/25+. So you put down a template, that likely veered way off, maybe killed some guys. But it's going to be dispelled on the enemy's next turn. And you likely sacrificed a fairly expensive guy to almost certainly kill less points than the enemy.
Though you both wasted a ton of magic/dispell dice.

Good points...
I will try it tomorrow night in a game. I think he will cause enough fear in my opponents mind that he will divert his focus to stopping him....which will take the focus off my other stuff.
Forgot to mention I'm running another lvl 2 as well, so there is almost no chance he will not have it....especially after rolling the other two guys first.

It sounds like it'd be quite funny to see in action. Though I wouldn't hinge an entire force on it working.

I'd like to hear how it does! Purple sun suicide missile FTW!
Another downside is, he'll be so close to the enemy he's sure to die after the first turn or so. So no more purple sun casting after that!

After rolling dice for an hour doing test runs, and doing a theoretical turn with my buddy tonight........fail. The random power dice, and relying on double 6's is not worth it........
I wonder if it will work though with a High Elf archmage on Great Eagle, with Book of Hoeth...yes its 310 points, but could easily earn his points by destroying large blocks/swaths of infantry at one time. Imagine Saurus Warriors taking a hit from that, or Beastmen, or Ogres, etc......Maybe even trying Malagor for Beastmen because he can fly. Maybe a turn 2 bomb from him in the flanks.
Or a High Elf Prince, 4+ ward save, enchanted shield, mounted on griffon, with the Lvl 1 wizard item....he'll have a 2+/4+ with a great weapon and be able to attempt the nuke.
Next game Im doing it just for the heck of it.
