Okay so here is what I have come up with

Slann [470] [focused rumination, focus of mastery, higher state, unfathomable presence, cupped hands]

Lore of fire... Because I roll like that.

what about you guys what focuses do you think make your slann, and more importantly what lores should they take.

I tend to use Cogitation instead of Presence.

His 4+ ward save should be enough, and with the new changes to MR I find the extra save to be not that great. The spells I worry about are the ones that kill outright, and ward saves won't work on that.

**edit** The reason I like Cogitation so much is that it will remove any 6's, negating IF. More importantly, if your enemies wizard fails to cast his spell he is done for the magic phase. A huge penalty.

I field him as the bsb

Mystery, Rumination, Cogitation, Consciousness, Cupped hands, BSB 495

You also guarantee that their wizards are safe from miscasts.

Lore of life, I say. Use Throne of Thorns first, and then you can throw tons of dice at the other spells to make your other units absolutely crazy. T8 regenerating saurus that you can bring back to life? Ugh that's what I DON'T want to see.

Ya, I do like the lore of life as well. So much potential with that lore.

You may protect them from miscasts, but your cupped hands is all you need. You can miscast and put it on them.

Does still miscast?

My slann build is...

Lore of life.
+1 dice
Loremaster
becalming
MR (2)
cupped hands

I stopped making him my bsb, its to risky, if for some reason his unit breaks he is autoslain, just not worth it.
1 dice and loremaster are pretty self explanatory.
MR2 gives him a ward save of 2+ against magic, this is especially nice against lore of shadow (or is it death) character sniping wizards... (I know it doesnt work on purple sun, but i dont intend to let that cast, especially with becalming). However against the other spells that can target characters even in a unit, the 2+ really helps, and is only like 30 points.
Cupped hands is self explanatory.
Becalming makes it impossible (or damn near) for people to wizard bomb.

what about the regeneration one? are regen saves even worth it?

Well the best builds (and most effective at dominating the magic phase) that I've seen:
BSB, Cupped Hands, Free Power dice, Loremaster, Becalming.

Can effectively negate irresistables, gets free dice which for a Lvl 4 is insane, 7 spells from a lore, Rerollable LD9, plus transfer the miscasts on a 2+.

I wouldn't take the reg since you already have a ward and can't use both. The MR is also pretty neglible since your Slann will usually be in a temple guard unit.

If your just playing a regular game you can obviously take any lore you want for that game, but for tournaments I'm really torn between death and life. Death is amazing for it's character sniping abilities, as well as purple sun and other stuff. Life is just insane for reviving/buffing up your own units, as well as throne of vines making everything a killer (2d6 Str 4 every magic phase is pretty rough in BTB contact with a unit).

Either way - I would be suprised to see someone run a lizardmen list without a Slann now - they're just too good.

Oh and stubborn stegs being able to use the general's LD is almost completely broken now - oh Coldblooded Stubborn 9 now with a reroll? Wow.

Nope, because you can only use a Regen Save OR a Ward Save, not both, and since he comes with a 4+ Ward Save, the Regen is pretty much useless.

I dont think im going to be running stegs anymore, they got a lot worse in this edition.

My steg with engine took a cannon to the face in my last 8th game, killing the skink priest, the 5 crew and putting 5 wounds on the steg, shooting from the unit put the last wound on it....

The whole cannons and templates hitting the entire model is really rough now.

Yeah id never use a slaan anymore without becalming.. Knowing with 100% certainty I cant get purple sun'd without a chance to dispel is extremely important. Again, it could cause a wizard to fail to cast and thats huge also

If they REALLY want to Purple Sun you, than you use a Power Scroll, which Becalming won't really help as much with. It's still quite nice for any normal casting attempt though.
