Been flicking through a lot of my old fantasy stuff looking for ideas as I've sat down with 100 marauders undercoated and pondering paint schemes. Now these guys are meant to be tribesmen, living off the land etc yet time and again the blocks of them are done each models trousers are x colour, and so on. Wondering about variation within the unit instead of having them look like they're auditioning for the Empire state troops and then getting the part of a unit look from things like shields, in some cases the leather is "dyed" blue to denote a Tzeentch affiliation etc. Wondering if this looks a little too ragtag and bitty if anyones seen it done.
Already a little worried as didn't want every unit of warriors to be clones across the army so each units differing depending on which power they serve with big changes even on that. E.g: tzeentch regiment 1 blue armour with dark gold trims, tzeentch regiment 2 brighter gold armour, purple trims (spare slaanesh standard bearer also as trying to save a bit of cash if I decide to have differing powers represented).

I find a good technique for giving variation without making them look too ragtag is to very slightly alter the skin tone on each soldier, and use say 4 different colours of blue fo thetrousers, each diffrent, but wihin thesame highliting palette.

I agree that Marauders wouldn't wear a standard uniform (whereas a unit of Warriors might). I'd recommend something like giving them all a strip of coloured cloth (worn as headband or armband or belt or scarf or pennant or whatever) to show their allegance. For their clothes, go for a erratic mixture of natural brown and grey tones, each one different.

Actually, Clang's idea is better than mine.

Combination of both might work well though, by varying the blue for example here and there in shades. Still trying to figure out the nice blue effect they got on the marauder in the woc army book
