can BSB have magic items or armour?

It is clearly in their rules.

By default, yes, however normally taking a magic banner restricts you from taking any other magic items.

The depends entirely on the army book you're using.

Their army book will tell you any restrictions they might have.

If in their ABSB section it doesn't say you can't take specific things, then they can take whatever they are legally allowed when they are a non-ABSB.

The brb faq allows bsb's to now take normal equipment like great weapons with a magic banner as well.

They always could, in all but thre remnant 6th and early 7th edition books.

So Lizards have always been able to have a scarvet BSB with great weapon.

Just like ALL other BSB's now, which was my point.

It's not clear that this has changed for all BSBs.

I think that applies to just the empire BSB now then. The dwarf can use any special without a problem.

For everything other than Black Orcs, it seems.

That normally bars Great Weapons and the like. However, BOrcs - by default - come with Choppa, Additional Choppa, and Great Weapon (See "Armed to da teef", which is only lost if choosing a magical weapon). Thus, a BOrc can still use a Great Weapon, but other Orc & Goblin models could not (same goes for Additional Hand Weapon). A bit of an edge, actually, since it means you can go for 3 WS6 S6 attacks on your BSB and spend 50pts in defensive gear, if you so desired (A 2+ / 5+ (2+ vs Flaming) or a 3+ / 4+, if you wanted Cavalry, or between 4+ / 5+ and 5+ / 4+ if on foot). On foot is durability increase against War Machines (Ignore 83% of incoming Cannonballs, Stone Throwers, and so on), but Cavalry is a durability rise for things like close combat (Needing something like an average of 216 S3 attacks thrown against the 2+ / 5+ dude to statistically drop him).

Why aren't Dwarves restricted?

There are NO BRB RULES restricting what weapons / armour etc a BSB may have. ANY restrictions on equipment are listed iun each armybook.

No I don't. The dwarf FAQ removes that he cannot have a great weapon and a shield now.

Erm, where, precisely?

The only change to page 50, where the rules for BSBs are, is to remove the second paragraph - whcih details the number of characters limit - and does not touch the equipment that BSBs may take.

Please provide the EXACT quote you are relying on.

Actually, it's page 51 but you are correct. I picked that up from a post on Bugmans but didn't doublecheck that to be correct.

He never could. No extra weapon or shield. And no runic weapons or armor if he takes a runic standard.
