im curious and saw this today someone had khan with a command squad joined to a bike squad.

now...can you actually do this? or does khan with a command squad count as joining them. I cant find any rules about this.

I don't think you can do that. An Independant Character can only join one squad at a time. The command squad comes with the independant character as a free space in the HQ slot, but its still a squad, so you can only join one squad at a time.

If the command squad is classified as an "honor guard", "retinue", or "bodyguard", or anything of that sorts, then no, it or he can't be attached to another squad if I remember correctly.

Check pg. 48 of the BRB under Retinues.

"the character counts as an upgrade character until all of the other members of this unit are killed, at which point it starts counting as an independent character and will do so for the rest of the game"

it all depends on the details which aren't clear to me from your post. if khan was attached to his command squad then he/they could not in addition join a bike squad at the same time. with 5th edition marines, you don't have to accompany your command squad like previous edition codexes said (they don't count as a retinue either). can you buy a command squad for khan and deploy them without him while he's with a bike squad? sure.

Pookee; 2 notes

1) The Command Squad(and Honor guard squad) is not a retinue, they are a separate unit that comes with(or rather purchasable through) a Captain(or Chapter Master), and the Leader IC involved can Join or leave them freely.

2) Even when a retinue(the only kind of squad that an IC then counts as an upgrade character for) is chosen an IC cannot then join another squad along with the retinue as neither he nor the retinue are ICs.

In short OP; what you saw was an illegal maneuver.

Page 48 of the rulebook. Last paragraph.

The IC does not count as an IC as long as he has his retinue/Command Squad/bodyguards. He only counts as an IC when all the members of that squad are killed, at which point he could join another unit just like a normal IC. Assuming that there is another unit to join, that is...

2 things:

First; the question has been answered.

second; a Command squad is not a retinue(this has already been mentioned here) so the retinue rules hold no bearing on the discussion at hand.
