Yes, you can make each one have completely different war gear. However, since they have just one wound you get limited benefit from it.

yes. absolutely. different weapon options to play the wound allocation game, jump packs and descent of angels let you choose when and where you fight, and allow you to use cover against the badguys, a few priests to make you virtually immune to small arms, sanguinor + holy banner gives each guy 5 attacks on the charge... wipe them at init 5 and most of their power weapons will never touch you. This army could be extremely ugly, but would take alot of balls and finesse to play. I think you should go for it. Be sure to bring honor guard with 4 flame throwers to deal with horde out riders you don't want to waste your charge on gaunts when the swarm lord is right behind them.

They most certainly can take advantage of wound allocation if you make a them inot unique groups, its just not as effective as multi wound models, doesnt mean you cant be wrapping multiple plas shots onto 1 guy while bolters hit the rest though.
