Oliver Stone: 'Jewish-Dominated Media' Prevents Hitler from Being Portrayed 'in Context'
By Alana Goodman (Bio | Archive)
Sun, 07/25/2010 - 21:03 ET

Director Oliver Stone belittled the Holocaust during a shocking interview with the Sunday Times today, claiming that America's focus on the Jewish massacre was a product of the "Jewish domination of the media."
The director also defended Hitler and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and railed against the "powerful lobby" of Jews in America.

Stone said that his upcoming Showtime documentary series "Secret History of America," seeks to put Hitler and Communist dictator Joseph Stalin "in context."

"Hitler was a Frankenstein but there was also a Dr Frankenstein. German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support," Stone told Sunday Times' reporter Camilla Long.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Stone said that, "Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people, 25 or 30 [million killed]."

The Sunday Times interviewer then asked why there was such a focus on the Holocaust.

"The Jewish domination of the media," responded Stone. "There's a major lobby in the United States. They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f***** up United States foreign policy for years."

The director, who recently met with Iranian President Ahmadinejad, also slammed the U.S. policy toward Iran as "horrible."

"Iran isn't necessarily the good guy," said Stone. "[B]ut we don't know the full story!"

The Scarface screenwriter had even more encouraging words for socialist Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who Stone called "a brave, blunt, earthy" man. The director has recently been promoting his Chavez-praising documentary called "South of the Border."

When the interviewer pointed out that Chavez has had a less-than-stellar record on human rights, Stone immediately dismissed the criticism.

"The internet's fully free [in Venezuela]," said Stone. "You can say what the hell you like. Compare it with all the other countries: Mexico, Guatemala, above all Colombia, which is a joke."

While Stone has not been as blunt about his views on Jews and the Holocaust in the past, he has been outspoken in his fondness for Chavez and his disagreements with the U.S.'s policy on Iran.

On ABC's Good Morning America on July 28, the director told anchor George Stephanopoulos that he "absolutely" believes Chavez is a good person, and claimed that there was "there's no pattern of censorship in this country [Venezuela]."

Stone also said that if the U.S. pursued sanctions against Iran, "it's going to be like North Vietnam again."

Shocked I am that Oliver Stone would say such things. My monocle almost popped off just reading the article. It just seems so out of character for him.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Heh, yah.

Oliver stone generally praises establishment ideals and imagery in movies like " Born on the Fourth of July" or "Natural Born Killers". He also criticizes unfounded, conspiratorial thinking with works like "JFK", which is largely based on the memoirs of a homophobic attorney with added material from UFO chaser Jim Marrs.

Oliver Stone is a very skilled director, technically. He's also a complete moonbat.

Still, I've got hope for Wall Street II.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Oh, I'm not saying anything about his artistic skill. He's just conspiracy obsessed. Thats another movie I want to see but probably won't get around to.

I don't think its anti-Semitic, I just think its batty. He didn't really say anything about the character or nature of Jews based on race, except perhaps the hard worker thing, I'm not sure what he's saying there. I think it was just a belief in a Jewish or Israeli power bloc conspiracy, which is par for the course for him, though I'm sure the ADL would consider it anti-semitic. The ADL thinks everyone is anti-semitic though.

That's not racist, that's paranoid. I'm sure you're not alone, as a lot of people are going to call it racist, but its not.

Its like if someone says that their boss is afraid to criticize Joe about being late to work, but they're held responsible for the smallest errors, because Joe is black. That isn't racist, thats an opinion that is probably paranoid. If you say blacks are lazy, criminal, or inferior because of their race, thats probably racist.

Furthermore, I don't think he said he plans on showing Hitler in a "better light". That is a misquote. He said he want's to put Hitler "in context". That could mean anything or nothing.

The line about the Russians isn't racist either, but it is kind of stupid IMHO. He's not mentioning that, although many of them were civilians, many of those killed were soldiers. Thats called war. Its an inflammatory comment but its not racist.

I have a simple test. If you make a statement, and the Klan agrees with you, then you're a racist.

Thats not paranoia, thats racism. Paranoia is inherent in racism. Quit covering for what it is.

Like most things you can't reduce it to a simple black and white analysis, no pun intended. The Klan probably would agree, collectively, that you should go to church on Sunday. Does that make you a racist if you agree with them? To limit it to comments about race, the Klan probably states that black people have dark skin. If I agree that black people have dark skin, does that make me racist?

I'm not trying to defend him. I'm not in the Oliver Stone fan club or anything. I just don't think its racist.

Exactly. Stone didn't ascribe any characteristics to the Jewish 'race', nor did he imply that a certain Jew exhibits a certain characteristic because he's Jewish, so he wasn't being racist. He was being paranoid, and may have been operating under a set of facts which do not correspond with reality; as embodied by his comments regarding Israel and American foreign policy.

Racism ranks up there with evolution in my list of frequently misunderstood concepts; largely because people seem quick to use it as a blanket term for especially offensive behavior. There's probably an interesting thesis in there for anyone involved in American Studies.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Interesting, in between the positive reviews I've read and this one I'm getting the picture of an entertaining but ultimately shallow movie. The more positive reviews highlight the former, the more negative reviews highlight thee latter.

Stone makes the mistake of equating the deaths of Russians on the Eastern Front and the deaths of Jews and others in the death camps, in exactly the same way other people on this forum were equating the deaths of people in Soviet Russia with Hitler's bodycount. It's stupid because the how and why of people's deaths matter, it isn't just about the total bodycount.

Probably, but they were the majority so I guess it follows that that is who comes to mind. I don't think that is manipulation, I just think its the way it is. However, do I think the *state* of Israel is above using the holocaust as propaganda? No, I do not. That is what states do, use propaganda.

Also, doesn't 'The Holocaust' (also referred to as The Shoah) only refer to the deaths of Jewish victims of the Holocaust specifically? There wasn't a thing which the Nazi party did that they called 'The Holocaust' in which millions people died, and which has subsequently been co-opted by jews in the media - the NSDAP enacted a program of extermenation of 'undesirable' elements in their society. It has become known in Jewish culture as The Holocaust, referring to the large number of Jews murdered in these atrocities. It has religious orgins and refers specifically to the Jews that were murdered. That is used to refer to the entireity of the Nazi extermination program is not the result of a Jewish media conspiracy, only ignorance on the part of people who use the word, unaware of it's meaning.

That technically may be right, but in common usage the Holocaust refers to what happened to all the undesirables eliminated by the state, and I see no reason to change that. Again, I have never seen a moral difference in a government purging someone because of their ethnicity or because of their political beliefs. Its all the same.

I would disagree. The Holocaust is a very specific term and different from a holocaust, or the Grey Knight spell. The Holocaust refers to the Nazi's "final solution to the Jewish question". I don't really know anyone who doesn't know that other groups were targeted, it isn't a secret, but there was a special zeal for taking down Jewish citizens, and with invasion, foreign ones. The Jews got a Wansee Conference where the others just had memos.

No its not. Its specific to the Jews murdered by the Nazis and their fellow travellers. That its grown to encompass all the victims of the Nazi regime is not relevant.

Undoubtedly Jews got "special treatment", and certainly were the majority of the victims. I just don't see the point of being exclusive with the term. How do you describe, say, Jehovah's Witnesses killed. Do you say "victims of the political and ethnic purges committed in the years prior to and during World War II by the Nazi government of Germany" or some such linguistic wrangling, or can we just say, "victims of the holocaust"?
