Hi,

First time poster so hope I'm not breaking any rules around here with this post, especially as I'm sure it's been answered before but can't find anything on search:

With the large tyranids such as the Tervigon and T-Fex what size base is the biggest you can use and still play without too many people complaining? I like to model my miini's with a realistic size and [espeically the tervigon] the 60mm base is just far too small.

I don't really intend to use these in a tourney but want to extend my army with these monsters of death.

Again sorry if I'm stepping on toes here, hoping I can post more insightful posts in the future ^_^

Thanks, Pope

I have usually seen them on the large oval bases a la the Trygon.

That is how I made mine.

I have never heard a complaint.

Use whatever size base looks appropriate for the model, and you'll get few complaints.

Wow quick replies thanks ^_^

I'll give it a go on the oval base, the design I had in mind has about 20ish termagaunts inside it so obviously will need to build it up but think it'd work nice.

ty for the help.

Ditto. It's a 6 wound, T6 beastie, much like the Trygon; no one has had any issues with it sharing the same size base, and I've used them from Adepticon, through Ard Boyz, and down in SoCal.

Yeah, the 60mm are a little small but that's what people are gonna get from me (and a great many people in the Vancouver area if the trend holds from the metrotown GW). Our overly expensive and fairly un-impressive carnifexes are now magically tervigons when I apply this special piece of tube like green stuff...

Yes, I am bitter, even if I did pick up an army of nids again after the codex came out.

Riddle me this: what has four sides, moves twelve inches, and moved fourteen?

This is actually the main other reason I think the larger oval bases work better (other than as noted by Janthkin). Many folks convert a carnifex into one. It makes it simple to tell from an actual carnifex.

Wait, so being bitter is a good reason to loudly and publicly declare that a whore region has decided to model for advantage?

Not for an advantage, out of irritation at having had 3 $50 models run into the ground (Miss you, old Tyranid army, and I hope you don't hate me for painting you like crap). Also, I wouldn't say everyone here does it. I've seen three or four people crank out the carnifex-as-tervigon proxy and intend to myself when everything is painted up.

As for advantage, a larger base (as opposed to a smaller one) gives a tervigon a rather significant advantage. It's an extra inch or two in every direction that you can spawn gaunts in. Gaunts that can then move, shoot, and assault as normal. Gaunts that could have furious charge and poisoned attacks. I suppose it could also give it a tiny, insignificant advantage in firing weapons along different a different axis. Move it so that the long end of the oval is facing perpendicular to your intended target then in the shooting phase use that free spin thing to push the long end towards the enemy, gaining about an inch and a half? It's like moving vehicles...

The only advantage I can think of for using a smaller base is for the purposes of deep strike... which none of the 'do-it-yourself-with-the-models-we-nerfed' MCs can do. Well, that and keeping things out of close combat, though I feel that only Orks and other nids would suffer from this.

I will again affirm what I said, the 60mm's are a little small for the creature can do. I just don't see any real benefit or downside for rebasing a carnifex with a green-stuff tube. Also, bitter passive-aggressive mental victories over a terrible codex rewrite...

Also, going back and looking at the picture in the codex I've realized that MY GOD is that thing tall. I mean, if you really want modeling for advantage, anyone NOT putting their model's base an inch up off the table would seem to be guilty. I mean, seriously, look at that thing! Its got two sets of carnifex back plates going up at about a 45 degree angle and then the spore chimneys on top of that.

"Any base that makes the model look good and cool will be accepted" is a rules as played answer.

"The base the model was provided with" is the rules as written answer.

If you play in a tournament and the opponent think victory is important enough, or if he think you're being a douche enough, the rules do give him right if he claim you are modeling for advantage if you use anything but the base type the model was supplied with. Don't worry too much, though, since very few people will ever do this due to karma or ignorance.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Actually in a tournament they could claim that rule, and attempt to get a TO to agree, however I imagine most TOs would frown on such an obvious attempt at douchery and refuse to force you to take the models off.

Well then it's a good thing the Tervigon model Games Workshop released is on a specific size of base....oh wait.

Anyone who tries this kind of snarky B.S. with the Tervigon is a rules lawyering douche and I guarantee any sort of decent TO would tell them to get stuffed.

Rawr giant Beasties~!
No, good post man. And it's all true the only real advantage they gain is they're not quite as monstorus for cover - but hey, SitW doesn't effect embarked psykers and million and one petty things to hate the codex - I can live with little big guys What the real problem is going to be is when the Tervigon kit is something the size of a Land Raider and we have all these little Carnigons running around ^_^

Lol @ Whores modeling for advantage
