Subject says it all.

Can you shoot 1 squad to DEATH and then assault a different squad. or are you forced to not be able to assault?

Luckily, Games Workshop published some material on this topic recently. It's called the 5th Edition Rulebook!

And if I remember correctly, you can.

Last time I checked you can only assault the squad you fired upon. Then again, I don't have my book on me right now so I can't double check.

IIRC the *only* time you can assault something that you didnt shoot, is if you blow up a transport, you can assault the unit that was inside after they come out.
I could be wrong though.

Correct the only means of assaulting something other then you shot at is either A) if you blew up a transport and are assaulting the contents or B) you multi-assault the unit you shot at and another unit nearby.

To answer the original question, if you killed the non-transport target with shots you can not assault.

You are mostly correct.
In general, you can only assault the unit you shot at (BRB page 33) unless able to assault multiple units (BRB page 34) or if shooting a transport and destroying it, the unit that shot the transport can then assault the passengers (if able to assault in the first place) BRB page 67.

Interesting. It would make sense if there was one ork and then a squad of grots to kill the ork then assault the grots or whatever, but alas, it is not to be. Thanks guys for the help on clearing this up. Looks like ill shoot the grots, then multiassault the ork

Well, how about the situation you have a flamer that hits 2 different squads?

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

One of the squads has to be declared to be the 'target'. This also covers the bit in the template rules that require you to place the flamer template over the as many models as possible in the target unit. Can lead to a situation where you must cover 4 models in the target unit and one in the second unit even tho it's possible to cover 3 models in the target unit and 4 more in the second unit. Gotta take the first combo because it's the target unit that matters, not the combined total.
