KROOT CARNIVORES

This blog is my attempt to convert and paint an entirely Kroot army. Of course, this means Kroot battlesuits, Kroot Devilfish, Kroot Piranhas, Kroot Fire Warriors, and Kroot Pathfinders as well.

First kroot here: How did I do? Suggestions besides thinning paint?

It is a good paint job

Don't like choice of skin tone though. It looks like bone, like an exoskeleton. Makes the beak look extra-wierd

looks great.

I would suggest a wash over all the skin with Devlan Mud. It will tone down the light and bring up the dark a little, tying the colours together better.

Keep up the good work and show us how you get on.

I like it. I second the previous poster's wash suggestion and would add that a different color for the beak would really add something to the model for very little effort.

Yeah, do something with those head spines, but overall I like it. Definitely a unique color variant.

I have two more on the way, though one is pretty bad so far. I was considering devlan mud but I'm not sure yet, I haven't always got great results with it. I agree, the light beak makes it look like he's got a milk moustache or something, but what colour would you suggest?
I'm thinking purple for the spines at the moment, any thoughts?

Yeah, I would suggest you do the spines as a tropical bird colour. Something like a bright red, orange, green or blue. But I'm sure a bright purple would look good too.

I have a very small update, this time with this guy's friends.
The darker one I painted just like the rest, and then washed with Devlan Mud. I think I like the brighter, warpaint-like look, and will probably highlight him again. No spine colours as of yet, and I'm still debating about weapons colours.

Here's another one I did, entered in Shades of Red, the contest run at http://underthecouch.net/utc/
Recently I spilled some paint on him, so I may have to strip him and start anew.
I'm currently working on two more, one with much more shading that I normally use, hopefully it'll turn out all right. Enjoy!

Love the owl sitting there, reminds me of my Shaman. Love the Kroot, they're a really versatile kit. Good colours, the high contrast from dark to light seems break up the model and act like a natural camouflage, maybe its just me.

My personal preference, however, would be to do the beak and claws a different colour.

Keep it up though, good stuff.

A small update, as I found my camera.

The following Carnivore was put together and painted fairly quickly, although I've no idea where his head went. He still needs quite a bit of work, but hopefully this provides some insight towards my painting process.

Dakka is hurting me with its problems. The pictures below the quoted text are for above the quoted text!
Automatically Appended Next Post:
And a final update for the night.
This is the first model I've tried shading on, with mixing paints. I think it turned out well, but looks a bit like it's glowing. Next time I'm going to focus on making the paint start to shade closer to the recesses, to make sure more of the final layer of Bleached Bone gets through.

I still need to work on the cloth, belly area, spines, and gun, but otherwise I'm fairly satisfied.

And finally, the whole squad so far.

Wish me luck in getting off my lazy butt and updating again soon!

Great looking Kroot. The paint does somewhat look like bone/chitin. However, you could consider it warpaint that was developed to terrify their enemies, since they look kinda ghostly.

I really like them! It's a colour scheme I haven't seen done before, and it seems to fit pretty well. I like the warpaint idea too - kind of like a tribe that rubs chalky paint stuff on themselves before battle

good job, although i dont know if i like the severe transition from dark to light. A little too much i think. Maybe water down some lighter brown and create your own wash to go over it again? I mean good job, and great color choice. I just think maybe hitting it with a middle tone would naturally bring the colors together making them more smooth feeling.

A few users posted earlier it seemed a bit like warpaint. My idea was that this particular band of Kroot found an interesting animal to eat that would give them this warpaint-like look. I agree, it looks much too harsh, but I'm working on shading it. The problem is that I really like the solid Bleached Bone as the final layer, and it looks out of place on anything but a Bestial Brown undercoat. However, I'm still experimenting, and I'll see if your suggestion helps. Thanks!

Not as of yet. I have exams starting Friday, the weekend off, and exams until Wednesday. Then I'll have a bit more free time to work on this... I do have one significant bit to add...but I'll leave you all in suspense for now.

Hello, All. I am partially ashamed to show my face...it has been half a year. Or more.

Anyway, I got a little work done in between events in my busy life, and here are the results:

These are a few carnivores I started, and didn't get anywhere with. They'll be finished eventually. Give me another 6 months, and I swear they'll have another layer of paint.

The ones that I've finished painting the skin tone, or at least almost finished:

There is also a Krootox I received as a gift. The rider had a badly warped leg, and I fear I'll have to crack open some green stuff to fix it. If anyone has any tips on fixing thick bent metal parts, let me know. I burned my finger on it once already trying to remedy the situation.

Some hounds. The one on the left has the skin mostly done, but nothing else. The one on the right is "finished". I went for a much whiter, bonier look than the kroot here: Where the kroot have some meat on them and lots of muscles, the hounds give me the impression ob being just bones. I don't think it worked though.

Oh, and here's the start of a vehicle. The pop bottle was the beginning, but then I found these round things instead. They came from a vending machine that had earbuds in them...the earbuds were useless and broke after a day or two, but the container that held them is a treasure.
Note the plasticard treads: these will be "tied" together with green stuff eventually.

I've also been working on some ideas for Kroot Fire Warriors. I'm not sure how I'm going to depict their 4+ armour save (or their terrible combat skills) but I think I've decided on the gun:

Let me know where I should cut off the barrel of the kroot rifle to attach the new one: I can't decide.

Oh, and some basing. I found these neat little pieces in a motorcycle kit that got thrown away: but I salvaged these pieces before its destruction. Then I smashed them apart and threw them on bases.

Finally, the whole pack:

Thank you for watching, and I'm sure I'll have something else to say sooner than 2012.
