I was sitting around, zoning on the TV today, and i came up with what seems like a great idea for tactics to use with the BA that i am building. Im sure that someone else has already come up with this, and it seems like a pretty obvious tactic, but here it is anyway. red dots are tac squad, henceforth known as "meat shield", blue dots are assault squad/DC, and black dots are enemy. i used five of each for simplicity. just trying to find a was to ensure that i get the assault with my CC squads.

[Thumb - enemy assault2.JPG]

[Thumb - Ass Marines move2.JPG]
assault marines move to the other side of combat

Seriously, i would appreciate some input. if this doesnt work, by all means tell me. if it does work, also tell me. it seems like it would be pretty obvious what you were doing, but if thats not the case, and people will actually charge that front squad and assume the back squad would just sit there, people are dumber than i thought.

Not really seeing what your great strategy is here. Assault marines have very good mobility, and should be able to choose their engagements most of the time. There are also few enemies that a tactic of hanging back behind tacticals will work against.

You gain nothing from charging from behind, so what you're describing here seems like a common counter-attack. And good players will of course know that your assault squad will intervene.

In short, there's just nothing new to this idea, you're describing a counter attack

It doesn't really work. You could get the assault off anyways with your assault marines, feeding a combat squad of tacticals to the unit first is unnecessary. You probably don't want to slow down your assault marines by holding them back.

In the real world, it wouldn't be a bad plan... strategically. By that I mean large scale.

In 40k, it would be hard if not almost impossible to pull off squad-by-squad. I see what you want to do, try it out, and tell us how it works out!

So the assault marines are going to move 6" a turn behind tactical squads while everything is being bombarded by tons of ranged fire?

Just run assault squads in free rhinos. He charges the rhinos, you charge back. He doesnt charge the rhinos, you charge him anyway. Plus you upgrade moving 12" to moving 18" for first turn. After that a 6" move and 6" charge should be enough

I hate hard counters. In a game of rock, paper, scissors, I hate playing any of the factions because no matter what you choose you might as well not deploy against your hard counter. I want to use a gun. Rock, paper, and scissors could all probably still beat gun, but gun will never feel like a game is a lost cause.

OK, I think that in all honesty it's a rather weak and obvious strategy.

Personally, I'd say a better version would be having a gun-line with Tac Marines and Heavy Weapons holding back and blasting the enemy, when the enemy closes to a threatening range they are counter charged by assault squads or death company.

Even so, I'd argue it'd be better to simply attack (rather than counter-attack) the enemy whilst the tactical squads provide covering fire and nab objectives.

To be fair it is a simple and well used tactic of locking an enemy unit and hitting the flanks/rear hard.

The problems seem pretty much covered above.
You only have 6 turns and it all depends what the opponents other units are doing.

Like Dave, would have thought it better to soften up with fire from the tacs and assaulting with your assault team. You say yourself that is what they do best

I like it! Using Assault Marine to "Assault" Sun Tzu would be proud!

Actually am just glad to see a BA player that is actually still using jump packs

This is not rly a mind blowing thing. Its prety much how to use jump infantry defencively. Honestly its not bad if you are on the defence and have the patience to wait for the enemy to walk into an obvious trap. But being that it is an obvious trap, people will probibly shoot your red or jump over then and assult your blue IMO.

That's what i was thinking, that it was really obvious, but i posted anyway, just in case someone came up with a sneaky way it could work

I don't really think there is a way to make a counter attack 'sneaky'. 40k is like chess any if you can train yourself to project 2-3 turns into the future nothing will really ever take you by surprise. The dice will always surprise us, but not tactics if you know your opponent's army well enough.
