I much prefer the classic/old-school look when it comes to Ork walkers, and as such I have been messing around with building a Mega-Dred ( IA8). It took me three tries before i arrived at one that had the right angles, sclae and "feel" to it, and here is the result (with a fresh coat of rusty primer for a base coat):

Shown with a killa kan and Stonpa for height scale reference:

Tried to add lots of interesting details like the ammo belts and chains, etc. I may add some Armourcast cinematic effects to tsome of the guns, and I plan a smoke plume for the smoke stack so it looks to be bellowing thick b;ack smoke. Also a few grots on the base for effect.

It is still WIP as far as painting obviously as this is only the base coat.

C&C welcome...

Sweet! It's good how you've used Stompa parts, yet it's not as big as a Stompa, it's just the right size.

Yeah, it is far less wide and "deep" than a Stompa as well. Thanks.

I think it's built nicely and all, but to me it feels like a mini stompa, not a mega dread. It will still look awesome, but if I saw that on a table, I wouldn't know what to count it as. Even if you kept the stompa-esque patchwork plate hull, ditching the can-shaped core and spindly, piston-driven legs kind of kills the association with the previous incarnation of kans/dreads.

Again, it's a very cool build (the chains actually work on this guy, which is pretty rare, and the ammo belts are just perfect), I just don't get the feel of the unit you want it to represent.

Don't know if you've noticed but GW has ditched most of the classic look for kans and dreads themselves( unfortunately). They have gone for a more humanoid look on the new kans, dreads and mega-dread by ditching the piston legs for legs with knees, etc.

When you boil it down a "mega-dread" is simply any walker bigger than a deff dred but smaller than a stompa. And yes the idea was to build a "mini-stompa": which IS a mega-dread. History also has given us othe rexamples of such builds in this size range like the Russbots, etc.

Seeing as Orks don't follow standard construction designs and that each Big Mek has his own ideas about what is proppa it is perfectly feasible imho that a mek might design a mega-dred that looks like a mini-stompa rather than designing something totally unrelated to how anything else looks like FW's Mega-dred model for example.

Also the problem of simply building a bigger copy of the old school dreads (with can shaped core and piston legs) is that often such builds end up looking like Inquisitor scale models instead of 40K scale warmachines.

Thanks for checking it out.
