Very simple query, probably a stupidly obvious question but I can't find this in the rule book. I may just be blind today however, apologies if that's the case!

Basically: Can unoccupied transport units capture objectives, seeing as they are from the troops section of the codex? I'd have thought they could, as the rule states that any unit from the troops section can, but it seems a bit odd. IE: Could I disembark my SM unit from a rhino, capture one objective with the SMs then trundle the Rhino over to the other and capture it as well?

If this is the case, suddenly transports for my SMs seem a lot more appealing!

They can only contest.
It's only when a scoring unit is embarked that they are scoring, but it's entirely because of the squad inside.

Sadly, I have no page number for you, but try looking at the Missions section and go through the Scoring section again.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Vehicles are not scoring.

agreed. in general, vehicles (even ones that are bought with or count as troops) aren't scoring. the only exception is the land speeder you can buy with a dark angel ravenwing attack squadron.

Main Rules, p. 90, Column 2, last paragraph:

"Units of Troops embarked in a transport can control objectives (measure the distance to their vehicle's hull)."

Thus, the vehicle itself does not score, but if the embarked unit is Troops, then the Troops inside may contest and control from within the vehicle.

Does this mean that Troops can do this inside of a DT only, or can they do it from any vehicle with a transport capacity?

Any vehicle with a transport capacity. SM scouts can do it from a land speeder storm, and that's a fast choice.
