I had a tournament this weekend and I was playing against Tyranids. There was a group of homogants that got shot to pieces and failed leadership. They fellback and got into synapse range of a Hive Tyrant I was told since they are fearless now they regroup. I wasn't sure about this considering they was below half strength and called a TO. He thought i was FAQ'd that it worked like that. It wasn't a big deal there was only three 'gants left but I'd like to know if that is how it really works?

Depending on timing, it may have been correct.

Page 75 in the BRB, last sentance under Fearless rule.

It states they automatically regroup at the start of their next movement phase. If they fall back into synapse range, they would have regrouped the next turn - if still in range of the Tyrant.

They automatically rally, regardless of below half strength, but only if within synapse before moving (i.e next movement phase).

Yep, there are a lot of regrouping abilities that get to ignore the below 50% and/or the enemy within 6"/coherency stipulations. The Synapse/Avatar bubbles ignore all restrictions, as do IG Order Get Back in the Fight and the SoB Faith ability that turns them Fearless.
