Subject: take a ld to shoot at a further away target?

Hi. I recently played a game against an excelent player [he was sporting - not in it to win it.]
he eluded to a rule in which if I don't fire at the closest target, I must take a Ld. test to see wether I hit my intended target or the closest.
is this a real rule?
I don't care if it wasn't, it made sense.

That's a rule from an earlier edition of the rules, 4th IIRC.

From what I can remember that was a rule back in 2nd edition although I don't think it's in the current edition.

Unless you play as Black Templars, and you're stuck with bad rules...

The rule was called target priorityin 4th ed, and no longer exists in the main rule book however DOES exist in the Templar codex (mainly because they found it harder to test to shoot further away)
It was done away with in 5th ed.

Solon, tell that guy to play 5th. The Targer Priority rule was abolished after 4th Edition.

Was the allusion that:
"There used to be a rule that you had to take a Ld test to shoot at anything but the nearest target, but that rule has gone now"?

The rule for BT's is called Kill Them All and after a sentence of fluff it says:
"If a Black Templar Infantry, Jump Infantry, or Bike unit shoots in the Shooting phase, it suffers a -1 modifier to its Leadership when testing to see if it can target any enemy unit other then the closest."p23Codex: Black Templars.
It's when testing, but since Target Priority is out of the game there is nothing forcing the test upon them in the first place.

That's the same rule that breaks the Tau target lock. says you can shoot at a different target then the rest of the unit as long as you make a target priority check. Of course there is no such thing as a target priority check so most people just ignore that part.

Oh wow You're right, I didn't think to look at the faq because the entry in the codex is so clearly written. Score one for GW using faq's to change what they want changed instead of just using them to clear up loose rules. Always thought it strange that things get "forgotten" when the core rules change, but I guess they do adapt old codex when they intend an old removed rule to essentially remain in effect for a particular army and when they don't want it they just let things lie where they are.

Good thing rules changes in the faq's are GW's house rules and not mine. Of course I have to say that it's very rare indeed that I shoot any of my BT unit's at something other than that enemy unit in charge range...and therefore the closest anyway.
