So I'm starting this poll because I'm trying to get peoples opinions on whether or not GW was creative enough to tie the WHFB universe together with the W40K universe by introducing the Old Ones. For those of you who don't know who the old ones are, in the WHFB Rulebook and in certain army books (I'm thinking Lizardmen and Chaos here) the Old Ones are mentioned quite a bit as the ones who created the WHFB world. They did this by pulling the planet closer to the sun, teaching the Elves magic, the Dwarfs craftsmanship, and the Humans to speak, etc, also it mentions that they created a portal to another "Universe" or Galaxy (its not quite clear) and that this portal one day collapsed when the Old Ones stopped coming to the WHFB world. Which leads me into the 40k tie in.

In the Necron Codex, and possibly other books I think in the rulebook to, but most prevelently in the Necron Codex it mentions that the Necrontyr were in a never ending war with a race called the Old Ones (who it also mentions created the Eldar and Orks to fight the Necrontyr) who lived longer and were far more advanced than the Necrontyr. Until of course the Necrontyr found the C'tan who helped them to defeat the Old Ones by stealing the Necrontyr's souls and creating an army of undead robots.

So I'm asking do you think that the Old Ones are the same Old Ones in both stories and that the Necrontyr were the reason the Old Ones stopped coming to the WHFB world because they annhialated them? It would seem so since the Old Ones in 40k were also able to achieve great feats plus it makes for a really cool connection between Fantasy and 40k. Or do you think that GW isn't that clever and that they just happened to use the name Old Ones for both races (Ooops) and that they didn't mean anything by it?

Let me get your opinion on this because I'm really interested in the background material for both Fantasy and 40k it gives the games more flavor IMHO.

Back in the days of WFB 3rd and Rogue Trader, it was hinted that the Warhammer World of WFB was some where in the Eye of Terror. That being said, GW likes to change fluff like underpants. Hell, I remember when the Ultramarines had a commander who was half Eldar! Originally, I'm sure they were all the same.

If you can ever get your hands on the old Realm of Chaos Books, there is a lot of info in there that explains this.

There is or was a Slani race in 40k.

Sir Isaac Newton may be the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space, but John von Neumann is the logistics officer that eats your problems and turns them into kit.

Yep Old Ones are called the Old Slann. I haven't really seen them say that the WHFB world isn't in the 40k universe. I'm still going with it being in the Eye of Terror somewhere.

At one time GW did a bunch of hinting that Fantasy took place somewhere in the 40k universe, but I believe the later eventually said no, it's an alternate one, just with a lot of similar themed fluff.

Is there somewhere you can point me to where the term "old slann" or "old slani" is mentioned? That would be very cool.

I think this is one of the areas where GW isn't going to tie themselves down; they want things to be separate now, but they were certainly hinting at the tie-in once upon a time. I personally like to believe the connection

I put yes, but I think for game purposes they are different. But they used the Old Ones as kind of a generic, "where do we come from without pissing off real life religions." It's an old trick game/comic/whatever companies have done for decades. Because while we might ponder our existence in the real world, in fantasy worlds, they can actually figure this stuff out conclusively, and some people might get pissed off if there was a Jesus or Buddha or Shiva who started the ball rolling, so they cop-out and make it...The Old Ones.

And Lizardmen were taught magic first. Elves are newbies.

I 've always believed it's there somewhere, it's a big galaxy and there are many feudal worlds in 40K.

That doesn't mean the two games should ever mix though...

Yeah the reason I started this is because, like you RiTides, I think the connection between the 40k universe and the Fantasy one is pretty cool. Of course if thats the case then the Necrons are responsible for ruining the Fantasy world by killing the Old Ones, which in turn caused Chaos to spill out across the world, which is why we now have the army WoC. I think its cool but ya never know with GW because like Khornholio said GW does change fluff...Alot.

Sure, I used them during a Tyranid discussion about the Hive Mind. I can't remember what I was trying to prove then, probably The Outsider =/= The Hive Mind.

The what?! Anyone got a link?

Also after the Dark Shadows/Albion campaign didn't the highest ranked races get "40k-ish" wargear, roughly analogous to lightening claws, powerfists and flamers?

Found the name Iliyan Nastase, but that's about it so far. Also the information for him seems to be in White Dwarf 97.

Kept getting led here during the search.

Taken from White Dwarf 97:

"Chief Librarian Astropath IlIiyan Nastase
Illiyan was born to a human mother on the world of Badab following the expulsion of the tyrant there in 912 of the current millennium. His father was an unknown Eldar mercenary. The youngster was gene-tested at birth in accord with the law and subsequently taken into Imperial custody. He was reared in the government compound by the Imperial Mission which took over the running of Badab after the war.

Along with other potential psychics he undertook the journey to Earth in 924 where further tests led to the eventual soul-binding in 925. From that point Nastase was recruited into the Administratum as an Astropath. He attained the ranks of Secundus, Prefect and eventually rose to hold Consulship for four years, helping to run Terra's advisory Senate to the Master of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. Following this he undertook four years service with the fleet, a further two years with the Dark Angels Marines and was appointed as chief of the Macragge interstellar communications link under the jurisdiction of the Ultra-Marines (965). Nastase is now 76 rears old (current year 987) but, thanks to his parentage, shows few signs of age."
