Ok! Its time to get me motivated!
I just recieved a text to say my first ever forge world order just arrived at home, so I'm eagerly typing this in my lunch break wishing 5pm woud hurry up and arrive
My grand plan is to make a 8500+ point LatD style Apocalypse army, using a combination of the Chaos Space Marine, Chaos Demon and Imperial Guard codecies, effectivly playing as all 3 races. CSM's as more of an Elite and HQ of the army, IG making up the bulk of the infantry and some Bloodletters just for flavour.
I've always loved the forge world Bloodthirster, and wanted him to be the focal point of my army. Luckily I came into £150 recently so took it as a sign and ordered him (after years of drooling over this page http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/DAEMONS_AND__BEASTS/BLOODTHIRSTER-GREATER-DAEMON-OF-KHORNE.html). I was truly amazed at how quick Its turned up (ordered on monday night, turned up wednesday morning), and cant wait to get home to take some pictures for you wonderful people .
More to come....
Automatically Appended Next Post:
No replies so far? how rude of you 40-something people that have viewed so far
Here come the photos!
So this is what I find awaiting me! just thought I'd take a few pic's of the bits (apologies about the pic's they were taken on my phone). This is what the beastie looks like!
^^The main body. I was really confused as to why the mouth was missing the bottom jaw until I found it lurking in another bag. Phew! Relief
^^The two legs and hands, just to give you an idea of size, the handle in the axe-less hand is the same size as a space marine!
I didn't get a picture of the wings annoyingly, but they were about the size of my hand I'm not lying when I say this is a HUGE "miniature".
I then went about cleaning all the pieces in warm soapy water to wash of any of the releasing agent that might be left from the casting. It doesn't take long and can make a real difference when getting that 1st coat of paint down. I then spent the next hour and a half filing bits and pieces down, clipping off all the excess bits, You really get to appreciate the detail when you spend that long checking it over. Then I was rudely interrupted buy my girlfriend who arrived in her new car, so I had to take a couple hours away from my desk to drive about and get drive thru
After my break I got on with assembling the few bits I could without needing to pin bits together, It was getting late so I didn't want to feth it up!
This is as far as I got this evening...Its always nice to round it off with some more photos, so here they come!
Shoulder guard - I think it looks awesome.
Both legs together from the front.
And from the back
Close up of the head with horns freshly in place!

Wow it really looks like nobody is going to comment :(
I'll carry on anyway for the time being.
Okay, the assembling of my bloodthirster is really coming along now. I thought I'd take some pic's of the wings to give you a size comparison (these things are pretty massive, just one of them is bigger than my winged demon prince!)
I'm going to hold back from pinning and gluing the wings to the rest of the model and paint the body and wings individually, They are so big it would prevent me doing justice to the entire back side of the model!
Next I spent the best part of an hour trying to get the legs to attach to the base, It was heavily textured so getting a good enough bond to be able to support the rest of the models weight was the first really difficulty I came across. I ended up green stuff-ing two circular patches onto the base and putting a pin in both leg's to finally get it to hold. After all that time I ended up with this!
I kept all the green stuff hidden, which I was very glad about and I now have a nice sturdy base to assemble the rest of the beast on
After getting the bottom of the "mini" built I set about pinning the torso to the legs. This was another job that seemed to take much more time than expected, getting 3 pins to line up in a ball and socket type joint. For ways to make this a little easier I was searching Dakka (and the other inferior forums ), I found this article --> http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/239928.page#713622 very handy so a big thank you to Cypher871 for that . Still it took the best part of a hour and several attempts to get to this stage
Now the model really seems to be coming together! a couple of pins later and this is as far as I've got so far...
HOPEFULLY I might get at least 1 comment before my next update! So please let me know what you think if you view it

Woo finally some response
@SilverMK2- noted about rotating the images, completely slipped my mind. I will do that from now on.
@VikingScott- I'll be using him as An'ggrath as well when I eventually play with him, I bought it 90% for painting 10% gaming. I hadn't even seen his stats before I bought it weighing in at 888 points its fair to say it wont be a common sight in my army!
@Rose_Mountainz- Yep, cleaning him was the first job, pinning was a pain in the arse but it was nothing compared to what I'd have to do if it broke once he was fully painted!
@Popsicle and weetyskemian44 - I've just this second gone outside to spray him up :thumbs up:. I'm not going to have much more time today to get paint on him so it will be next week some time before the really interesting stuff starts
Thanks for the comments guys

@indiana1000- From base to the tip of his axe he's 10" tall, I haven't got his whip and wings attached yet but when I do he will be considerably wider than he is tall.
@Popsicle- He's sprayed up and partly base coated so far. I'll upload pic's later this evening hopefully.
@sillyboy- Yeah, I'm going to get the Forge world command squads to replace the normal ones. I'm still struggling to find a colour scheme I like for the rest of the guardsmen though
Hold tight, I've base coated him scorched brown so far and I'm going to be working that up with scorched brown/red gore and then progressively lightening with scorched/bestial brown + red gore to give a similar (but more red rather than brown/orange colour than the one on the forge world site. I've base coated some of his armour too, that's going to end up brass + tin bitz-y. Just to get the mental images going for you
I'm going to warn you now my painting looks pretty shocking until it nears completion when I tie it all together, so try not to be too brutal when I update later
More to come...

Okay, so as promised, here is the first (of many) stages of painting. As I said in my last post, Its probably going to look a little messy until the closing stages so try not to be to ruthless with your comments
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I want this guy looking as good as I can possibly get him so any advice would be awesome.
Here's the front after base coating. Doesn't look all that different, but no matter how much time I spend working on him I still love seeing his bad-ass angry-ness (especially rotated as per SilverMK2's request )
I stuck some blu-tack over the points where the wings will eventually be placed to stop it being entirely filled with spray and ensure I can get a decent join later.
After removing all the blu-tack This is what I was left with, Nice clean spaces to (eventually) attach the huge evil bat wings to.
Much later I reached this stage. All the skin has been based in scorched brown (with the exception of a few little spots around his "back mohawk" (can't think of a better way to describe it ) that I'll be tidying up either tomorrow or Wednesday. The Armour that I managed to give a very rough base coat to (bestial brown) is eventually going to to be bronze/brass colours, so a brown seemed the most logical colour to start with.
And that's as much as I could do before forcing myself to stop! Hopefully I'll have all of Wednesday after work to really crack on with the painting, so I'll try and update then, but If not it will be the day after. Any advice or C+C before then could really help so feel free to throw any suggestions at me
Hope you like it so far!

@Xanthos - They do have better rules if you use Imperial armour 7 Using him as a normal bloodthirster would be stupid, being so huge, pretty much anything on the board can get LOS to him
@Darkwulf - I wil be giving him a round base, im going to build off the one that comes with the model as the texture and rocky theme of the base is the same as my board. No point wasting it
@squilverine - Thanks
@Samus_aran115 - I've wanted it for years so I thought it's best to just go for it now instead of leaving myself just staring at the pics every time of go on the FW site As far as the skin goes, I'll do my best, wouldn't want to dissapoint!
@Popsicle + JDM- yes this does float my resin crack-house boat Whats the point of playing apocalypse if your not going to really go for it?!

Hopefully this won't link to my last post!
Okay, so as promised, here is my work so far. Whilst I'm still not 100% on how I intend to paint the skin I decided to crack on with all the armour.
First of all I gave it a base coat of Bestial Brown all over, I wasn't overly careful or trying to get a consistent cover across the different plates so that there would be a less plain flat finish.
I then gave it all a layer of Dwarf Bronze. This coat I was more careful to get even coverage, but the brown underneath provided subtle differences of light and shade. You'll have to take my word for it, my phone camera isn't anywhere near good enough to pick up the difference
After getting to this point I decided to concentrate purely on his big ornate shoulder pad so I (and you) could have an idea of what it would eventually look like.
I gave two over all coats of Devlan Mud to dull down the armour. I then used Badab Black to paint in the recesses to create some shading.
I then did some highlighting with a 50-50 mix of Dwarf bronze and Bestial Brown on the raised areas, then a further highlight with an even mixture of the two previous colours and Burnished Gold.
Nearly getting to the end...I then used some more Devlan Mud, this time watered down over the whole area and left it to dry before finally adding a very light drybrush of just Burnished Gold.
I then started this process again on part of his chest, one of his legs and his wrist guard, but didn't finish these areas before I had to get ready for a battle (not using the Demon though unfortunately) .
Here's the pictures
The body, this is before I had finished doing all the Dwarf Bronze.
This is him mostly bronzed up and with one layer lot of wash on his right leg.
The arm guard after a bit of Devlan Mud
Close-up of his leg before I took to it with Badab black
Shoulder pad after all the washes and highlights (sorry its a little out of focus)
Shoulder after the dry brushing (again sorry its a little fuzzy)
And the final one! shows more clearly the finished effect on the armour, I think the lighting makes it look a little off, but it gives you the overall feel
So that's how far I've made it up to now C+C or advice greatly appreciated.
...Now, off to slaughter some Space Marines

Hey all
Thought I would do another very quick update so you can see what I've managed to get done. All the armour (with the exception of the plate on the top of his left leg) Is done. Using the same method I used on his shoulder pad. There will still be little bits to touch up but I will do all of that at the end once I've done the skin, weapons, hair, wings ect, just to tie the whole piece together.
This is what he's looking like now:
Now I'm really struggling for what to do with the skin, I wan't a reddy-brown finish and have been playing around with a few ideas but none of them have struck me as being the definite effect I want. So if anybody has any suggestions or examples I would be VERY grateful
Hopefully I'll update again this weekend. I look forward to all your comments

I think its about time I do a bigger update to see if I can get a little more in the way of feed back, So here goes!
When I unpackaged the two lengths of the Bloodthirster's Whip they were perfectly straight, so to make them a little more whip-like I had to put them in boiling water and bend them into the desired shape.
It took a good few attempts to shape them in such a way that they matched one another and that they weren't left touching the floor, but eventually this was the end product.
I then stuck a pin into the end of each strand and stuck the spiky tips on. Then by drilling a hole in the handle of the whip, the pieces can be slotted in and removed easily to help with transport and storage. Now he looks like this.
So, with that now out of the way I went on to finally have a go at painting his skin. on top of the flat coat of Scorched brown I first did was of Baal Red, followed by a dry brush of equal amounts of Scorched brown and Merchrite Red. Next came a dry brush of 1 part Scorched Brown, 1 part Merchrite Red, 1 part Bestial Brown to brighten the overall colour. Now I'm debating either another wash of Baal Red, or maybe a 50-50 mix of Merchrite and Bestial. But I'll see how I feel when I next sit down to paint Here's the pic's.
So... What does Dakka think??
Next I'm deciding on what washes to try, or if it needs lightening any more. Any opinions would be mega helpful, and thanks again to everyone who takes the time to read through

@KaloranSLC - Feth! I spent hours getting rid of them, looks like I missed one :( I'll go back and get it when I next have a chance. Thanks for noticing.
@Trilobite - In the flesh it is alot darker, I'm not sure why it looks as bright in the pictures.
@everyone else - Thanks! I should hopefully have time later this week to get another decent update done, but in the meantime, any more C+C would be ace
Thanks again for all your comments!

@sonofruss- I looked at your pictures the day I bought mine for inspiration It's really impressive, kudos to you.
I have a VERY limited amount of red ink left, how would you suggest its best used. I'd only have enough to do it once so I dont want to waste it. I've been saving the ink but I think this guy is worthy of me using the last of it

Its been an age since I've updated and I'm going to be in a field far away from my computer next week so I'll let you lot see how things are coming along.
After lots of different thoughts and attempts I have finally finished the colours for his skin from the waist up the skin is done so I'll post the pic's and explain how I did it
After the steps I'd done from the end of my last post I started trying to make the veins stand out a little more but using red wash on either side of them
I then washed over the whole area to remove some of the really obvious contrast that looked stupid, to make it look a little more natural.
I then went to town with a mixture of red gore drybrushing and baal red wash to make him more Khorne-y coloured , and painted a thin coat of 50:50 blood red/bestial brown over the veins again.
To finish (after lots of looking at the pic's on Forge World to find out why it didn't quite look right) I washer the recesses to make it more shadowy with badab black and devlan mud. the colours in the picture are a little off in the picture compared to IRL but you get the right idea.
With that i decided to move on and have a play around with the wings. Sprayed them up Chaos black and after many many dry brushes of different shades of grey they looked like this..
I just noticed the was was clearly still wet when I took the picture the wet brown area will be gradually faded from the skin colour to the black/grey of rest of the wings.
Just to finish off, I painted some of the detail on his face, I still have no clue what colour to paint his eyes. at first I thought red, but I dont want it to blend into the rest of the model. Black is too dark. So any suggestions would be awesome
Thanks for viewing guys Let me know what you all think

Hey guy's and gal's, sorry its been so long since my last update, I was on "holiday" for a week and for some unknown reason ended up buying Island of Blood last weekend so I havent really had time to update! Here is what I've managed to get done though.....
After finishing off the skin I went around and tidied up the little messes I'd made on the armour and other details and then went to town working on them, the straps are scorched brown with a badab black wash, the buckle's and other metal details are boltgun metal, with a devlan mun and badab black wash, highlighted with mithril silver, then devlan mudded again.
The bone knee pad was painted with a base of dheneb stone, given various washes of devlan mud and drybrushed with bleached bone.
Then I started trying different things with the eyes, After 3 (or 4 I cant remember) different attempts at the milky white colour that many of you suggested I just couldn't get it looking sensible, whatever I tried left the deamon looking goofy so I went on to my second favourite suggestion of orange/yellow. this was alot easier to get looking good (although you cant really tell in the pic :p ....I REALLY need to find a decent macro camera to take a pic when this guy is fully finished for you guys). Although you cant really see in the picture, the eyes are orange around the edges, blended into yellow in the centre, just take my word for it
After getting bored of spending 2 hours on his face, I started work on the axe. Its nowhere near done but I thought I would let you see how things were coming along 6" away up at the end of his arm
That's all for the time being. Hopefully, by the next time I post, the Wings will be ready to pin onto this guy so you can see him in his full glory
As always, comments are greatly appreciated

Thanks for all the support guys I have so much to get done at the moment: This guy, the rest of my Apoc force (I'll post some pics of what I've done so far soon), and my new impulsive adventure into WHFB I'll start doing smaller posts like the one above as frequently as I can, I only get about an hour a day to work on any warhammer so forgive me if its a little slow.
@weetyskemian44- Thats my problem, I've spent probably coming up to 20+ hours on this guy and I'm still finding little details that I've previously overlooked! I suppose itsa a testament to how incredibly detailed the "mini" is
@TyraelVladinhurst- Are you actually getting one?? I wouldn't want to paint another one for a LONG time considering how much time this is taking me, and how much other stuff I have on my plate. I've never even considered doing work for anybody else, (I dont see myself as being good enough) but thank you, I take your comment as a REALLY big compliment

*Prays that this doesn't join onto my last post*
I found some free time so this is what I've got through today
After another half hour of finding more little detail to paint, I got a little over excited and decided to crack on with the wings! I only had the time to get one of them attached, but I got a bit trigger happy with the camera so I thought I'd post an update.
With my trusty drill and straightened out paper clip I spent AGES trying to find a way to get the pins and the holes on the other piece to line up, (If anyone can give me some advice on how to do this more reliably for the other wing I'd be very grateful) I got the wing to fit on .
This made me notice a lot of things about how I had painted the wings, and now that its on I think I'll be doing a lot more work on it! The arm-like bits will be the more similar to the body, I'll blend it out to eventually being black/grey further up. I'm pretty happy with the details on the wings, I'm intentionally keeping them quite plain so that the rest of the model stands out, and isn't lost in a huge sea of brown-ness.
For the time being, this is how he's looking .......
(^^I apologise again for the rubbish-ness of my camera!)
Here he is with the whip put back in to show him in all his glory
That's all for today, but I'm expecting to maybe have some free time again tomorrow evening so I might be able to crack on with some more pictures then (if your lucky and leave lots of comments )

Hey Dakka! Sorry it's been so long since I last updated, my laptop got overrun with virus' and I literally just got it back 15 minutes ago!
Since my last update I have:
Got the second wing attached- This took literally hours, its extremely fiddly trying to work around the other wing (and the shoulder pad that i'm now regretting putting on so early ). As a result there were some gaps that I have since greenstuffed and painted over. But just a word of warning to anybody else buys this guy, DONT STICK THE BIG SHOULDER PAD ON UNTILL LAST It really was that much of a pain!
Painted most of the axe- the head of the axe is painted in the same way as the armour (as I previously described), the handle was bestial brown with a million different layers of both Devlan mud and Badab black wash, and the shaft (is that the right word?! don't know what else to call it!) was boltgun metal, washed with Badab black and highlighted with mithril silver.
Other than that It was just more picking out the details all over this big guy to make him look as good as I possibly can. Here come the pictures
Ooh yeah, the blood has come on a little more than shown in this picture. Its Merchrite Red followed by a Red Gore drybrush, then a few layers of red ink and a layer of 'Ard Coat to make it look nice and bloody.
Here he is with both wings attached, He truly is massive, the next pictures I called in a favour from Kharn the Betrayer to give you guys an idea of his hugeness. (sorry for how blury they are)
I have since started painting the ligaments in his wings to match hins skin colour, so far I have done up to the top with the main "arms", I don't know if i should do each one or just fade it out into the black likr ethe rest of the wing. I'll upload a picture when I can to get your opinion's on what I should do.
Finally, I'd like to say a big thank you to fellow Dakkite thelordoflife for the bloodletters I got from him in the swapshop. They complete my Chaos deamons part of the Apocalypse army (not that any of it is anywhere near finished being painted )! So here is a suitably blurry picture of the 40 bloodletters backed up by the Bloodthirster.
Note: you can sort of see the difference to the bloody axe and the brown on the wings, that obviously isn't the point of the picture but atleast you see I'm not lying about making some progress
Thats it for now....Any C+C is welcome as always, and oppinions on what to do about the wings will really help

As promised
Should they stay pretty much the same, with just work on blending the brown-ness into the black and then shadowing/highlighting so it matches the body? OR continue the brown down all of the tendons in the wings? What do you guys think?
PS. Thank you for my lone comment rose at least somebody decided to say something

Yeah I'm inclined to agre with you Rose, I wanted to keep the wings as plain as I could so it didnt draw away from the rest of the model, but I think i might just do them in a darker brown. The one area that I think might look odd is the top where the claws are (2nd picture), Its quite big and I don't know if it will look odd.
Does anybody else have a suggestion?
I'll have a play around with it this weekend and see what seems to work
