If a Tyranid Prime joins a unit of Carnifexes as an independent character, is he treated like joining normal units as far as being targeted in assaults, wound allocation for shooting etc.?

I found rules for ICs joining other units if they themselves are monstrous, but nothing about the situation outlined above. Though I did find out that all ICs have move through cover and skilled rider automatically. Didn't know that!

There are no special rules for the situation, so yes, it would be treated just like any other IC joining any other unit.

Yes, they are treated as any other IC.

The Advantage in this case is that if the unit is 1 Fex and 1 Prime (or even 2 and 2), the unit gets to benefit from Area Terrain or units in front of it for cover!

The Prime will benefit from majority toughness in shooting, too.

In an assault, it could be singled out as usual for an IC.

Neato. I'm bound and determined to try an army that has three carnies and a prime, all with regeneration. Win or lose I wanna see how they work, just didn't know if I would be able to stuff the prime in there or not.

As was stated above though make sure the numbers are even (2 & 2 or 1 & 1) so you can benefit from cover saves which the 'fex's wouldn't be able to normally.

Page 48 of BRB states IC's can not join units that consist of a single model (i.e. vehicles and monstrous creatures) (that are not also ICs)

so to get your cover saves and T6... you would have to have 2 carnies and 2 primes... not sure giving your carnies a cover save is worth both your hq slots (outside 1k games atleast)

edit: unless you argue that 5th ed carnies do not "always have to be a single model" ... in which i guess you could have a 1:1 ratio

That is exactly why you can pair 1 fex with 1 prime.

Ding Ding Ding!

Carnifex are no longer "Units of ALWAYS a single model", as they are units of 1-3. What you could not do is join a Tyranid Prime to a Hive Tyrant (though strangely enough you could attach a Prime to Tyrant+Guard and if the Guard die they may or may not remain attached to the Tyrant. Yay for werms!)

Also there is nothing stopping you purchasing 3 tyrant guard with a hive tyrant and a tyranid prime, leaving the hive tyrant unattached but attaching the prime to the guard brood. I guess if you wanted a winged HT and a pretty survivable static synapse base it would do the job....expensive though....and totally OT

It's still a very neat option and one I had never thought of. Nice to tuck that nugget of information away in case I decide it's ever needed. Thanks!
