Drop Trooper with Demo Charge

I wanted to know if it is worth it to take all vets over regulars. Vets cost alot more but i've been playin guard a little while now and lasguns do stink. That Higher BS is desirable at least I'd get a better chance of putting on some wounds but; they are still guardsmen. Beefin up a squad with points doesnt really make'em tougher (better armor I know) and that would mean fielding less troops. A mix seems better but then why not go with storm troops over vets?

Regular Troops
Advantages
You'll get up to2 to 5 squads of regular guys
A platoon command squad that can issue orders
Can possibly take 20 to 50 conscripts
Can take up to 5 heavy weapon squads
Can take up to 2 special weapon squads
You can form up an even bigger tide then either Orks or Nyds
in 1 full platoon you can get 135 guys, times that by 6.... *shudders*

Con
soak up points like hell
BS 2 or 3 with majority Str 3 AP - weapons
takes up a lot of space, extremely expensive to buy

Vets
Advantages
Can have 3 special weapons
don't cost as much as a platoon worth
BS 4
can get Carapace, Camo cloaks, demo charges, etc
can get shotguns

Con
You'll only get 20 to 60 guys on the field with min to max Troops
you have to put a lot of points into survivability.
See's to much use it Mech lists

Yea I got alot of tanks and I almost always play marines . I try to keep a themed force as much as I can. The one good thing I like about the regulars is that they do scare vindicators and rhino/razorbacks becuase I load up with genades. Maybe I should keep a couple squads of vets in Chimeras for objectives.

Stormtroopers cost 18 points.
Think about it.

AND feel no Pain.

AND gives his squad Stealth, move through cover and Infiltrate.

When you really think about it Harker is the least expensive upgrade character:

55 Points gives you a 10 point weapon, and most of a 30 point upgrade.

That is about 15-30 points(if you want to discount Forward sentries for the lack of defensive grenades) for move through cover and infiltrate granted to the squad, along with feel no pain on Harker(a 30 point upgrade in command squads, although that upgrade gives it to everyone in the squad) and +2 Str, +1 WS. He is a Freaking Steal(which is why i alsways take his squad with Flamers and Demolitions).

Stormtroopers(alluded to in post title, but not discussed in OP?) Are never worth their points.
Storm Trooper Pros:
-"uber grit" in the form of Hot-shot Lasgun, Hot shot Las pistol, and CCW on every model
-the option for 2 Special Weapons
-BS4 + Carapace armor
-AP3 lasguns
-Special Operations

Storm Trooper Cons:
-Cost, 16 points per model(with the sgt costing an additional 5 points) does not equate to the 10 points/model of vets with Carapace(leading us to believe that short-range AP3 lasguns, deepstrike, and Special operations are worth 6 points)
-The Shorter range of hot-shot lasguns(the Fluff doesn't even explain the loss of Range, and the hellgun was the same range of a Lasgun, but with an AP3)
-Special Operations are situational at best(granted they are varied enough the be of use in most situations)
-They are never scoring units
-vets get an additional Special weapon and the option of a heavy Weapon
-no Special Characters

Veterans are just there to carry more special weapons. Considering mechanized veterans is all the rage at tournaments, I'd say they're pretty damn good.

in my opinion i prefer stormtroopers (especially since your usually going against marine armys) as theyve got carapace armour, ap3 weapons, special operations and deepstrike.

i know veterans are good aswell but i think storm troopers are better and alot cooler.

AP3 lasguns isn't as effective against MEQ as it sounds.

Hell of a lot more useful than your average flashlight, though.

But not enough to justify the cost though.
