Long story short, love the 40k books, getting into fantasy with dark elves, what are some good books (preferably featuring them but doesnt have to)

http://www.blacklibrary.com/Warhammer/Malus-Darkblade

ideal for you I'd suggest

I'd also strongly recommend http://www.blacklibrary.com/Time-of-Legends/Malekith.html

and the follow up books to that.

Non dark elf related titles I'd suggest would be the Felix and Gotrek series, the Blackhearts omnibus and the Brunenr omnibus.

Most recently I was very impressed with http://www.blacklibrary.com/Warhammer/Warhammer-heroes/Sword-of-Justice.html

I believe they're currently OOP but both the "...in Marienburg" novels were superb too.

Yes, I think it's very very good indeed.

The character originally appeared in the Felix and Gotrek book, but you can read the series without having read those.

Is there a really good wood elf based book somewhere? Someone recommended it to me, and I forgot the title... they said it was the best warhammer-related book they'd read!

If I said that, I'd be biased, but I don't think they played woodies...

The ones I read (And loved) were

Blackhearts
Bloodborn
Gotrek and Felix
Malus Darkblade

All pretty good, and Gotrek n' Felix seems to be the flagship characters for Fantasy Black Library, and also the books that got me into Warhammer. Family bought me the 2 first Omnibus' as a gift, and I liked em' enough to start playing this most expensive of hobbies.

Brunner the Bounty Hunter. By C.L. Werner is a book I'm currently reading. Really well written and varied in the action and great plot.

I read it. As said, not a bad book but it isn't something you'll find particularly amazing.

I only read the first G&F Omnibus, but could suggest that series at least.

Blackhearts, definitely suggest. Probably not much better than GotF, but I found it great none the less.

Malus Darkblade, only read two books (first and Lord of Ruin), but they were still good books. Give a nice look at the Dark Elves and their realms, too.

I didn't like Heldenhammer, but Ambassador Chronicles easily falls in the same spot as Guardians of the Forest. Need to pick up Vampire Wars, as everyone I've talked to suggested that.

You forgot that Elvenslayer IS Dark Elf related, half of it taking place on a Black Arc. So it's a good read after Darkblade and Malekith.

Guardians of the Forest is nice read for Wood Elf fans. Describes their world in detail. Fantastic characterisation of War Dancers !

Also have a look at 2nd edition Warhammer RPG sourcebooks, which are full of background material. Personal favorite is "Children of the Horned Rat".

Personally, I got a deep understanding of the Warhammer World by playing Warhammer Online, as you WALK through and INTERACT with the Warhammer world, see villages and war camps of many fractions and solve specific RPG tasks there. If I play White Lions or Elysian Reavers, I know exactly how their home country looks, because I VISITED it! Too bad that the online concept art gallery seems to be offline now, was a good introduction to the world and the game.

I enjoyed Reiksguard quite a bit. First book i've read in a long time.

Mathias Thulmann: Witch Hunter (the omnibus) is an excellent read, it delves deep into the ideas of Witch Hunters and expands the fluff of the Empire. Anyone know if the "Empire Army" books are any good (Iron Company, Reiksguard, Grimblades, and Call to Arms)?

I'd recommend Gotrek and Felix to anybody, though IMHO, the first six by William King were the best. If you like Skaven, and Grey Seer Thanquol, then you should try Grey Seer.

How many short story omnibuses are there for Fantasy? I have "Tales of the Old World" and love it, but I'm pretty sure there are more.

Dunno if it counts, but the first Gotrek & Felix (Trollslayer) is a bunch of short storied involving Gotrek and Felix, it's only in the second novel that there is a single plot throughout the whole book.

The malus darkblade books are my favourite, its got a good story and lots of action and hes just so cool/unpredictable and crazy.

Gotrek and felix is really good aswell but as your doing dark elves i would start with malus as it may give you an idea to theme an army on or which special character you want.

Have just started Masters of Magic

This is my first BL book and possibly my last and will need some wizardry to get me to the end of the first chapter.

Are all BL so badly written?
(Sorry this is not intended as a flame just that my literary sensiblilities have been bludgeoned. If other people read and enjoy then am fine with that)

Partly it's that a lot of work needs to be churned out in a short span of time, partly it's that the intended audience is not that literate or sophisticated, partly I do think it's that some of the writers just aren't that great.

I've found them hit and miss. Though I don't play 40k anymore, I found the first few Horus Heresy books quite entertaining.

I've also found some Black Library stuff just grind on and on painfully long with not much variety/creativity. Of course, I found this to be true with much fantasy fiction.

I did enjoy Oathbreaker and Grudgebearer. It helps if you're already a fan of a particular race/niche in the background.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

The Malus Darkblade series was a great read.

I warn you now, do NOT read Gotrek and Felix. Why? Because it's good. At first. You'll like it, and then you'll continually want to read it, and after the third book it all goes downhill from there.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

How so, Cryonicleech? I'm not arguing, I am genuinely curious about in what way it goes downhill?

Just finished "Masters of Magic" by Chris Wraight despite my initial problems.

After what seemed to me a clunky opening I was able to get into the book.
It depicts a vast horde of Greenskins led by an ubershaman and the adventures of an acolyte grey wizard. The infighting and beaurocracy add sub plots to the narrative, as the Empire responds to prevent the Orcs reaching Altdorf.

Apart from some modern phrases that I personally find irksome, and the ineveviatable cliches, I enjoyed the read.
If you like magic in your Empire Army I would recommend the book. To be fair, would recommend it if you like the WHFB in general, as it will entertain without taxing the brain. Something I need right now, so it did a good job.

Have just got The Daemon's Curse which cost me 30p as a library discard.
So even if it a load of gakk laced gubbins I shalln't worry.
Somehow I don't think I will be liking Darkus Malblade too much

I notice it is co-written which doesn't inspire confidence, but the above comments reassure.
