Subject: Starting a fantasy army, What do I do?

So as the title says I am going to be starting a fantasy army soon. My friend just picked up some high elves, and the way he talks about them they seem almost unbeatable. I understand every list has something that can be tailored to beat it, but in general, what fantasy army is on par with the high elves? If it helps, my play style is aggressive, and I would like an army that plays similarly. An example of this is my tendancy to assualt with Necrons. Anyway, I am looking for advice on which armies are running around WHFB as a good competitor for high elves and fun to play. Thanks.

Hmm, perhaps you should start by asking questions in the right forum.

High elves aren't that good. They are a powerful army but they aren't broken.
If you want an agressive and CC based army maybe look into lizardmen, warriors of chaos or daemons. All of these would be able to take HE on easily and win.

How do those armies stack up against other armies besides high elves?

I'm not sure about where they are on the tiers but I am pretty sure they are all mid or top tier armies. They have a good chance against any army.

Quick pros/cons of HE's
Pro;
- Speed of Asuryan makes even our great weapons ASF
- High stats compared to other units
- Awesome special infantry choices
- Elite army, we ignore the duplicate choice restrictions
Cons;
- Low strength/toughness values mean they die quickly and won't inflict many kills vs high T opponents.
- Expensive, not so decent core units. Sure, we have good stats, but poor armour coupled with the low T value makes us easy to kill
- Both rare choices are not considered very good for this edition.
- Although not a gaming aspect, many of the models look bad (see high elf spearmen, silver helms, some lord choices)
