So as the title says I am going to be starting a fantasy army soon. My friend just picked up some high elves, and the way he talks about them they seem almost unbeatable. I understand every list has something that can be tailored to beat it, but in general, what fantasy army is on par with the high elves? If it helps, my play style is aggressive, and I would like an army that plays similarly. An example of this is my tendancy to assualt with Necrons. Anyway, I am looking for advice on which armies are running around WHFB as a good competitor for high elves and fun to play. Thanks.

High elves are a high skill, high magic, high point army with low toughness. The obvious weakness is to beat them down with quantity over quality. Skaven, Goblins or even Empire can flood the table with cheap troops. Chaos, Lizardmen or Ogres can relay in a high toughness to out last the elves.

If you are big into Necrons - Lizards could play in a similar way. Cold blooded will keep units from breaking - skinks are cheap, sauruses are tough and Slann have their own magical tricks.

You want an army thats aggressive and able to hurt High Elves? Go for Beastmen! Tough close combat units and good magic. If used well can out close combat most opposition.

Oh, forgot to mention, I've been playing and outdated army (Necrons) so when I start playing fantasy I would like to play something that doesn't wait seven years for new codexes. Just thought I would add that in.

Then if you can wait tomb kings new army book is on the way. Otherwise beastmen got theirs early this year. Possibly ogre kingdoms getting an update next year.

Is the tomb kings really really coming out or just a rumor? I am trying to get away from standard Necron play style... heard tomb kings might be a little similiar but I really dont know much about them.

Tomb Kings wouldn't be as similar as you would think, for one primary reason.

Magic Phase.

It's unlike anything in 40k, and Tomb Kinds are practically built around that one phase, it's where they do some truly ridiculous stuff.

Think I am settling on Beastmen. I've been reading through the GW website and they seem like a lot of fun. Good extra aggressive play style. Check the swap shop if you're looking for Necrons and have Beastmen! Shameless plug I know

Some people say Tomb Kings are next, others are saying Orcs & Goblins are next. It's hard to say for sure, though my money's on Chaos Daemons being the next book out...

Have fun starting your Warherd. Beastmen are very rewarding and the army has a great individuality. Plus a variety of ways to field a force. Its not the best army book ever with some of the magic gear and unit points costs. But a great step in the right direction. Plus the new main rulebook common magic items helps a lot.

Gors are an often overlooked core choice ( at least with the few beastmen players I Know. ). Though with 8th edition ungors got a little more useful in raider missile screens and big blocks with spear/shield at 6 points a piece and cheap command. Lore of beasts is also amazing for beastmen in the magic phase. Plus minotaurs are always solid performers. Chariots are also good. Oh and if you take harpies dont buy them from games workshop. Buy 2 sets of harpy wings from the bitz section and put them on some daemonettes. It looks alot better and is a damn sight cheaper. Plus requires minimal converting for a good model.
