Ok, fine, but then you look further in the DH codex, and on page 33 it shows an allied space marine army, and oh, look, what's that with them? Grey Knight terminators!

Please help this poor, simple man.

What that picture shows is a Space Marine army that has taken Grey Knights as allies.

You cannot take Allied Space Marines in an army where the main codex used is Daemon/Witchhunters (IE, units from those 'dexes fufill your minimum FOC slots). However, the image is of an ultramarine army taken from codex space marines with GK terminators allied to it, which is legal as an Inquisition book is not the 'parent' codex.

It would be overpowered to ally in SM to a WH/DH army but it apparently is not to ally WH/DH into a SM army...

I always thought it kind of odd how this works but I suppose it makes sense as far as the fluff.

If you have a Daemonhunter or Witchhunter army, you cannot take Grey Knights or Sisters of the Battle in the case of Witchhunters if you are bringing allied Space Marines. However, if you take a Space Marine army and you bring allied Daemonhunters or Witchhunters, you can however bring Grey Knights or SoB. The distrinction comes into play as to the type of Army you're bringing as allied Daemonhunters and Witchhunters are restricted in what FOC unit slots they may bring.

The picture has no bearing on the rules for this particular case.

what about SoB and DH allies? can a Sisters force take grey knights as allies?

Yes.

They may take allies from each other codices.

I've seen a SoB army with DH/GK allies before.
