Ok, i undestand that if i spray a squad with bolter rounds, the owning player chooses which models to remove after saves are sorted.
But what about templates (flamers specifically). If i position a flamer template to cover a certain model in a unit, does the owning player still get to choose the casualties? Or do they have to remove the models under the template?
My friends and i play the latter.

In the rulebook, under "template weapons," it's explicitly stated that the player does not have to remove the models under the template, he can remove any models in the unit, as normal.

You're thinking of 3rd ed, and it was stupid - you were able to snipe IC's with battlecannons, etc.
