Digging through some old stuff, I found "Chapter Approved: Fourth Book Of The Astronomicon." One of the lists contained therein is the Feral Orks. I was wondering the general opinion as to whether this was still a worthwhile list, or is it just rubbish in 5th edition?

I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH!

Well I like to think that they have a lot of worth in terms of the collecting, modelling and hobby side of things... If I was to collect orks, it would definately be a mob of ferals.

I personally haven't seen the 'chapter approved' article on them for quite a few years. Could you rehash the details for us? I remember it involved boar boyz (cyboars?) and an otherwise foot list...

OK, the Feral Ork list looks kind of like this:

HQ
Warboss, with Nobz and Pigdoks
Wyrdboy, with Brute Minderz

Elites
Brutes
Trappas, infiltrators that can set traps
Stikk Bommas

Troops
Huntas
Wildboyz
Gretchin
Madboyz

Fast Attack
Boarboyz
Herda, with Squighounds
Junkas, with Junktrukk

Heavy Support
Squiggoth, of varying sizes and power
Lobba Battery

So that is a recap of the units, with short explanations where I thought they might be needed.

Sadly, I don't even know if the list is still legal...

What I'd suggest, as I've had similar ideas, is to just "counts as".

Squiggoth = Battlewagon.

WFB Boar Chariot = Trukk/Buggy

etc.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I wasn't too worried about "legal" as I won't do tourneys just on principle, but I know that there has been a significant shift in points etc. and the list may just be so overcosted as to be unusable. I am using the Kroot Mercenary list out of the same book to add some flavor (in the case, roast turkey) to my Eldar before I start my Tau, and they are costing a point more than they do in Tau Empire. My buddies are very open minded and will let me try anything, really.

You'd probably be at a disadvantage since the "Chapter Approved" articles were mostly just for fun and weren't that competitive. Considering that that article is probably closing in on a decade old, you'd probably be grossly overpaying in points. I do remember hating that list though, since for some reason wild Orks are better shots.

For a friendly game, no problem. You might run into some contention in a pickup game at a hobby store or something, but it shouldn't be too bad. There's probably a few outdated rules and pieces of wargear in there that wouldn't work in 5th edition.

I was able to track down a copy of the current Ork codex for comparison, and the Brutes are equivalent to the current Ork Boyz, but cost 3 points more. And that seems pretty standard across the list, everyone is about 2 or 3 points more than in the current Ork Codex. Which, given the number of Orks needed, makes for quite a deficit.

Cryonicleech's suggestion is a good one, and would make for a very characterful army, but would leave out the fun units I wanted to take, the Trappas and the Herdas lol! Well, beggars can't be choosers, and this was just a thought for when I was done with my Tau (which I'm not starting until I'm done with my Eldar...) Who knows, maybe I'll do 1000 points just for fun if I feel rich!
