So I was watching James May's show, the one with toys not the cars, on BBC america earlier and there's a clip of him in a spitfire going "dakka dakka dakka dakka dakka dakka" like he's shooting the machine guns and, all of a sudden, it clicked and made sense to my American brain.
I had understood the context of the phrase, obviously being guns or shooty things, but never thought of it as an onomatopoeia for the machine guns from the WWII planes that kids over in Britain must have grown up imitating back in the day.
So it really is synonymous with "pew pew." 
So, yeah, I'm a n00b, but I thought that was a pretty cool 'ah ha' moment.

Well if you've ever heard the old Brownings and Thompsons from WW2 then you'll notce that they actually sound like "dakka dakka", also the basic ork guns tend to look like them as well, just my 2 cents

There are rules for each sound effect. You can't just use them willy-nilly. Each has a specific usage case.
Pew pew is for laser guns. Buck Rogers laserguns and star wars blasters go "pew pew".
Dakka dakka is for slug throwers.
Assault rifles, autoguns, sluggas and shootas, bolters an autocannons use "dakka dakka".
You must be a young'un to not know this. 
Oh, and ground vehicles with tracks or wheels go "Brrrmmmmm, brrrmmmmm", too.
You'd think that people didn't make these noises with mandollies - but you'd be wrong.

I though Bolters go "CLAP". They're often described as having a thunderclap sound.

No they shoot rockets... that have a very Minor explosion.
they are effectively gyro-jet rounds with a 2-stage ignition/Firing Mechanism. 1st stage, hammer strikes Casing, primer ignites, propellant ignites, Gasses expand, Bolt round is sent hurling down the barrel. Somewhere during that 1st stage of firing the round's rocket engine ignites, creating thrust, and adds to muzzle velocity while increasing velocity post muzzle.
The very minor explosion is caused by a time delay(albeit very short delay) impact fuse, igniting the explosive materials inside the bolt round.

Lasguns have that small *click* like when you turn a torch on.
Melta's hiss and then Kaboom when the moisture superheats.
Every Vehicle, regardless of whether it's tracked or not, screeches to a halt.
Oh, and valkyrie's go WHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (before getting sot down like mine always do...  )
