I was just musing while playing a game of 40K with my CSM just how dissapointed I am now with their paint scheme.

I started them 5 years when I returned to the hobby after almost a decade away, I remember being very happy with them when I painted them, but now they're roughly highlighted, with sloppy highlighting, and whilst from a distance they look ok on the table, there's so much that could be better, and they lack a certain cohesiveness. And of course on closer inspection, chips, damage, and other blemishes are present

Compared to my original army from 15 years ago they're amazing, those poor blood angels never had highlights or shading!

But then compared to my new army, crisply painted, details looking sharp, cohesive and looking imho great on the table!

So what do you do? Still love my CSM despite they're imperfections they're an army who have ravaged our imaginary galaxy. Do I strip them and start again? Thats too daunting. Do I sell them? No! too sentimental and too usefull as an option when playing.

I guess I'll wait a couple of years when the CSM get redone maybe then they'll be updated...

I started back in the early 90's and had to repaint my Blood Angels as they had a custom color from two colors GW no longer makes. My painting was pathetic compared to how I can't paint now with better paints and brushes and a lot of tutorials. I haven't become a great painter but I am a better painter now. I repainted my Eldar and Orks. Curiously my Worldeaters haven't been repainted although I haven't bought a CSM codex yet but I did like the old color scheme for them even though they are badly painted.

Well, doesn't really count as "old" models per se, but when I started painting I didn't really know anything about painting techniques, but I still thought my Grey Knight Terminators lokked awesome. Six months later and I'm repainting them, actually diluting the colours and highlighting the modesl. It makes quite a difference...

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

I sold my first army ( dark eldar) after about 4 years of playing. I began in early 2000's and fancied something new to play after 4 years. Still love the army. And hope to revisit them once new models come out.

My painting has gone downhill over the past 20 years... I once had maybe 3 or 4 hours a figure to paint, and armies only needed 20 or 30. Now, I only have maybe an hour a fig, and I need to paint 60 or more. Quality takes a nosedive!

I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH!

I'm always in two minds whether to update old models. For example I have a few of the very first 40k squats and also the Dwarf lords of legend set.
Now while the painting is a bit dodgy(they were painted twenty years ago)the flesh colour i achieved was to me perfection.Sadly i have not managed to reproduce it since.
I have no problem with more 'newer' period models being stripped down and repainted.

I don't like to think too much about how many models I had when I was a teenager...nor how little I sold them all for to a friend at school when I got bored of the game.

When I came back into the fold I managed to get my hands on a bunch of rogue trader models for very little cash and went back to GW to get some paints. By the time I left, the last thing I wanted to do was paint my 'old' models so I started again.

I feel your pain, starting again, or even worse, stripping something down and redoing it again feels like a lot of work for no result doesn't it. But then, you don't really paint a model for the final result in my opinion, you do it because you enjoy the process and imagining that model gunning down hordes of Orks and such!
