Just happened upon this while cruising the interwebs. . . thought it was a joke until I looked it up and realized that people actually believe this stuff.

http://jonathanturley.org/2010/08/01/australian-public-schools-teaching-humans-and-dinosaurs-co-existed/

Australia is facing a controversy that is all too familiar to Americans. Fundamentalists in state schools are teaching children that humans and dinosaurs lived together and Noah brought dinosaur eggs on to the Ark.

Children are also taught that Adam and Eve were not eaten by dinosaurs “because they were under a protective spell.”

This is consistent with Palintology — the new science advanced by Sarah Palin — which insists that man and dinosaur must have co-existed despite carbon dating and simple logic.

Yeah, I used to be a teacher and I still know a bunch of people who are, and I'm pretty sure that's not true. There might be some funky independent schools that are allowed to teach thier students garbage like that, but if they want state or federal funding then they are obliged to teach a certain curriculum.

For the most part this curriculum does not include any sort of religious education and if it does, its not that hokey garbage!

That's not too say humans and dinosaurs don't co exist...what about the Loch Ness Monster?

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I'd love to see his reference or sources... sounds like tripe to me. Back when I was in primary school we'd have 'scripture' classes and most of us got notes from our parents so we didn't have to do it.

I mean, I'm sure there are fundies everywhere and some of them work in schools - I finished school in a non-denominational Christian institution - but we had none of that.

That is so much cooler than the "evolution" story.

But in all serious ness. Carbon dating only is reliable source if the carbon in the atmosphere remained the same throught all of earths years. It only give rough estimsation. Also palin doesnt have commom sense.

Why do you allow this woman to continue working in politics?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Carbon dating's only accurate back about, if I recall correctly, to around 60,000 years BCE (which is still 10x farther back than New Earth creationists believe the world's age to be). Fortunately, there's a whole slew of other radiometric dating techniques out there which not only go much farther back, but also provide useful cross-checks on dating ranges. There's a good intro on wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiometric_dating#Modern_dating_methods

Carbon levels changing would not impact the vast majority of the other modern methods. Now, a changing value for alpha would cause a problem, but fortunately, there's some very good evidence from the astronomy and astrophysics folks that alpha hasn't changed.

How would carbon dating depend on the type of carbon not changing please?

Too late and tired to google (sorry for being a lazy git)
I thought it depended on an isotope which was consistent.

or did i misunderstand/forget something? (high probability)

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

Never having heard this load of crap before today surprises me but doesnt surprise me it came from Palin herself.
The only reason i can come up with WHY she is STILL a politician is because she is controversial and is also famous. Cant quite figure out why the Republican party puts up with stupidity like this out of her but they do and it has me confused.

The majority of modern testing no longer uses carbon dating as thier are other more effective means of dating

In Queensland they have scripture classes (for several major religions, and which you are able to opt out of). These classes are taught by 'enthusiastic citizens', basically local religious leaders volunteering their time.

All of that is fine until a group of fundamentalists managed to become teachers in a lot of these classes, and started teaching creationist nonsense.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

I can confirm this is true. There's a free period that's optional for students to listen to someone who volunteers and supplies their own curriculum. I know this is the case because my father is an Australian evangelist and he does exactly what this article is saying >.< So yeah, it's real, but they're also spinning it in a weird way.

Mage Armor? Nah, for a T-Rex you'd probably want a Wall of Force.

I will say that I haven't heard Sarah Palin endorse the Young Earth movement.

Interestingly, I was at a dinosaur museum in Cabazon, CA the other day and they have the walls there absolutely plastered with information that "destroys" the theory of evolution. If I wasn't on my phone I'd link to it...
