Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has found any alternative models to treekin?

imo they are way overpriced and look just 'meh'. I'd love to use them in a game though and have been scratching my head as to what could be used as a stand-in (and don't say twigs!!)

So, my ideas revolve either around finding an alternative model, or using a completely different model as a 'counts-as' but would suit the forest dwellers (more than likely animals or creatures of the deep dark woods)

Anyone got anything they could recommend for..

- Treekin
- Bears
- Lions/Panthers/Jaguar etc (was thinking the high-elves chariot for that)
- Wolves (maybe the space wolves ones? Not sure if they are big enough though
- Forest spirits
- Anything else that would dwell in a fantasy forest

Bear in mind it should be reasonably priced, and am happy to do some converting if need be...

Please post any links you have to anything you know about...

Cheers guys!
Snow (sigh, i too was sucked into my first ever WFB with 8th ed)

If your interested in making your own i have some pictures of my WIP of my wire-kin!

http://superlorro.blogspot.com/2010/08/wire-kin.html

Alot of people use wire and then use either greenstuff or other materials to give them body.

Great thing is you can make them however you like.
Mine are more like people, because i like them that way.
Though fluff-wise, Treekin are just dead trees being controlled by sprites.

Only badthing about it is, if your not the best at modelling, like myself, they wont look as good as GW quality :(

It's not like the GW treekin are any good to begin with...even if they were cheaper...

I say bring out more plastic kits!!

Oh, and since i've just started my first ever WFB army as wood elves (yay!), i also went hunting for alternative wild riders and eagles (again because the GW ones suck)

and came across these babies as i was inspired to convert that high elf griffon in the new box set coming out

And if you like, the link to the elves models has just the eagles without the riders... sweet sweet...

Oh, and since i'm in oz and don't want to pay the disgustingly expensive insurance tax (42 euros!!) i found you can get 'em here as well...

Going to be making some Treekin for my daughter as it will be pretty easy.
Have made a couple of trees already so it can't be any harder (famous last words).

Not liking either the GW Treekin or the fluff.
The dead tree thing makes them arboreal zombies!
Just doesn't tally somehow with the tree spirit forest of Athel Lorel. But that is just a personal preference and if others see it differently, it's good.

wow! I am going to be starting a HE army, and those wild riders in the link above would work great (albeit with a little converting) for Nobles mounted on great eagles... or just great eagles! also good luck with the alt tree kin models although it seems like you won't need it.

Imperial Fists- about 1,200pts.
Dwarves- >1,000pts.

Chibi has some awesome concept art for his treekin ideas!!! Seon, I like yours as a start, but I'd like to see more limbs, rather than just 2 legs and 2 arms- makes them look too human :-/

That's an awesome eagle model, snowman, I've seen pics of that used for wood elves before. I personally used 2 warhawk riders (without the riders!) for my eagles, as I think those models are excellent! You do need to fill in the hole for the rider's peg on his foot, which I have yet to do, though.

Yes i think i'll be hooking myself up with two of those 'wind riders'. I also thought of this guy on foot as a highborn (with his little eagle friend)

http://www.gamezoneminiatures.de/product_info.php/info/p203_Elf-Hero-with-Fenix.html

and the wind rider with the long spear just screams to be a noble with eagle mount and carrying the 'Dawnspear'.

Though to be honest i have yet to even come up with a list... might head over to the list building section and get some ideas...

I notice you are a heavy wood elves player RiTides? Any recommendations against chaos warriors?

That fig looks great for a character wearing the silvered steel armor as well.

Wow, that's a sweet model holding the bird! I would have thought it was a hawk, they call it "Fenix" which perhaps is referring to a phoenix...?

WoC seem tough in this edition! It's interesting, because they can still do the elite army with low numbers of tough warriors, or a horde list with marauders. They also have crazy magic, and the hellcannon, to go with it.

I think treemen are great against them, since they do have less shooting than most armies, and the high toughness and high number of wounds means it's probably going to survive to attack with 5 strength 6 attacks plus Thunderstomp! I'd be sure to equip a treeman ancient with annoyance of nettlings and cluster of radiants!

Treekin I believe will be good as well, since they're tough enough to hold their own in combat. Dryads will also be great for taking on smaller units with their high initiative and 2 attacks each.

I can't speak too much to the elf-side of things, since I only play the trees! However, a level 4 caster is a good choice for any army now, and if you take one for wood elves you'll be getting access to lore of life or beasts. In a high point level game, a treeman ancient and a level 4 caster would be the best lord choices, I think. At a lower point level, you're going to have to choose between the two.

Shooting, I'm not so sure about against WoC. Some glade guard would be good, but there's going to either be 1) a lot of armor to get through with an elite WoC force, or 2) a lot of numbers with a horde / marauder list. You're going to face combat, so you're going to have to be ready for it! Even if you take some shooting to try to whittle them down first.

I see wardancers fulfilling the same role as dryads, a hard-hitting unit that is fragile, but can take down a small enemy unit due to high initiative and lots of attacks.

Wildriders may be some help, but I have shelved them for this edition, as cavalry in general got a lot weaker and really can only support now, unless you've got an expensive unit of knights (such as WoC does!) that can survive getting attacked back and staying stuck in combat.

Eagles are also excellent, for warmachine hunting! As are waywatchers. My eagles have been the MVPs thus far in 8th edition, and you can take 2 and still bring a treeman for rare

Glade riders, I have not used... but vanguard movement, marching and shooting gives them an edge, although I think they're a little more vulnerable since fleeing is only 3D6 and pick the highest 2. With a bad roll, they won't survive to continue to harass the enemy. In general, wood elf harassment tactics got a lot worse, while some of our combat unit (trees) got better, although it is in the face of blocks in general becoming much more powerful. I think our style has to change a lot from the traditional guerilla warfare most players employed, but we can still hang!

Those are my thoughts, hopefully they are some help
