So I was thinking of ways to give Black Templars some sort of anti-psyker ability other than the currently worthless vow, and I came up with this idea:
Each time an enemy psyker sucessfully casts a psychic power, nominate one infantry unit in your army, that is on the table. That unit must immideately perform a Righteous Zeal test, as described in the Black Templars codex.
Overpowered or a fair way to make psykers think twice?

Against armies containing 1 the effect would not be great, and most psykers would carry on regardless.
However, against Eldar this could be very OP, I'll cast 4 powers at the start of my turn, you take 4 tests.
As i recall you don't have to move the full distance so i can't draw you out of terrain or closer to me unless you want to closer to my banshees for some reason, but doesn't righteous zeal have the chance of the BT falling back?

Yes, RZ could make me break, which is the drawback. And while I technically have to move, I can choose to move 0 inches and neutralize unwanted movement.
I can see what you're thinking though, it'd obviously affect different armies by a different amount, but so does psychic hoods, Shadow in the Warp and all other psychic defenses too. I just think that it's harsh that the only way for the Templars to get psychic defense, except for giving up their best advantage for a 5+ save against psychic stuff targeting a BT unit, is to ally in Grey Knights. IIRC the lowest amount of points a Templar has to pay for a psychic hood is 86 points. While it has unlimited range, it's kinda steep. And yes, I realize that a hood on a librarian costs more, but a librarian is WAAAAAAY more of a force multiplier than even a Grand Master.
Anyway, I felt that the possibility to fail the morale test would balance out a bit. This would also make both Chaplains and Marshals/Captains more worthwhile.

Nothing wrong with it per se, might make more sense as part of the anti psyker vow (abhor the witch?) then as a stand alone reaction. You could also limit it to one unit a turn or something, perhaps the closest one to the psyker or some such.
As an aside I don't actually think they need a psyker defense, its not as if they are the only army lacking one.

Sounds pretty fair to me, I'm only now starting a PROPER Back Templar army, and that sounds much better that Abhor the witch.

Hm...I always thought the BT "HAD" to move the D6" towards the nearest enemy when they took this test.

We have to move UP TO D6". Clever use of game mechanics FTW.
The whole problem with making it part of AtW is that army-wide preferred enemy is way better. If one was to make an all-comers list, you'd take AtC, NMtO, since it works against all armies, while an anti-psychic ability only works against armies with psykers.

Except those times you move towards the monolith because you had to test. I guess I just misunderstood since you "always" moved, as you said.
