I'm still building up for my Dwarf army. So far I've made one unit of Longbeards with Great Weapons and i have a box of warriors remaning that I could use to make another. What I'm wondering is if its worth it to make another Longbeard unit with Great Weapons. My plan is also to make a unit of Rangers at least from a unit of quarllers (mostly due to their weapon flexibility of having a crossbow, hand weapon, shield, and a great weapon. Also their ability to scout in is nice.).

Remember that you need 1 unit of Warriors to field 1 unit of Longbeards.

eg
10 Warriors
10000 longbeards with Great Weapon
also remember that they do not have to be the same size.

This I know, I have roughly 2 units of regular ol' warriors with hand weapon and shield. My question is more along the lines of are they worth a second unit of them with great weapons, or would they be better off being Longbeards with hand weapon/shield or just another unit o' warriors with hand weapon/shield.

I've only really used the longbeards with hand weapon and shield. They make a pretty nice center- durable, thanks to the decent save and WS 5 and not in danger of fleeing. They make a nice counterpart to hammerers, who I think fill the GW role better, what with stubborn.

I am interested in giving GW longbeards a run, though.

Hmmm, I have actually wondered about Longbeards with shields. Besides, I do have other units to more than pack in the great weapons. A good sizable unit of miners, a decent size unit of slayers on the way, and then the one unit of quarrellers to make into rangers.

Yeah, Longbeards can work well with Shields, giving you a nice anvil unit that can do some damage with WS5 S4.

Or take a dwarf lord and you get the first longbeards without restriction.

I run mine with great weapons and the 5++ against shooting Banner (very nice because this also generally covers most of my war machines too). They sit in the back until the first charge comes into the thunderer unit in front of them (which will probably flee and the Longbeards don't care), then they go on a killing spree. Only one game I have I had them not end up in the enemies deployment zones at the end of the game.

Remember as well that the new FAQ says that you can take Longbeard RANGERS without having any warriors at all!

Unless you're going to really do something with the ranger option, you're wasting alot of points to get around the min requirements.

Well, that depends. If you were already going to give them great weapons, then you're only paying an extra 1 point per model. Potentially worth it. It also gives you a unit to deploy after you've seen where everything else went. Or even to push forward if the situation calls for it.

Well so far my plan for the ranger option is to field a unit of quarrellers with added great weapon and shield, plus giving them the ranger option. My goal is to have an easily deployable, flexible unit. Because after the enemy is done setting up, I set these guys up 30" away from the target I want to harass until the enemy just says FRAK IT! and decides to send a unit towards them. The one of two things that would happen at that point is that the rangers catch the unit just far away enough to stop shooting and charge them with their great weapons, if the enemy though gets the charge first thats what the shields are for. At worst, I know their gonna die, at best, the enemy would ignore them and they continue to plunk bolts into whatever passes by them (or the charge in for some choppy with those great weapons).

If you take great weapons you lose the option to take hand weapon and shield in close combat. The only reason to take them along with great weapons now is for the +1 against shooting.

That is still somewhat good in any case.
