I'd say the Space Marine Codex as it has the better and more flexible rules and IIRC the Deathwing and Ravenwing were created post heresy to hunt the fallen...

Just make sure you don't use the Land Raider VARIANTS (Original is kosher) or the Thunderfire cannon, and I think the Vindicator.

Those are all post-heresy I believe.

Oh well, I must be mixing it up with something else.

Are there any Rhino variants that are post-heresy?

Woulden't most of the vehicles that are used today have been used during the Heresy and Great Crusade period (besides the variants that were created later)? That time period was when mankind was at it's greates technology wise and it was only after that period that the technology was lost untill things like the Land Raider and Land Speeder where found in STC form. I think you can use anything from the codex except for variants and still be fluffy (though a Land Speeder would be less likely to be used over a Jet Bike).

Wrong. During the Heresy.

To quote the Vindicator entry in the codex:

"The notion of fitting a high-calibre cannon into the hull of a Rhino first evolved during the very early years of the Horus Heresy, during the fierce inner-city battles on Rothern I."

Basically they took a large-bore Thunderer cannon and mounted it on a Rhino. The Vindicator is one of the few Imperial tanks to be made without an STC.

The Space Marine Codex offers more 'counts as' opportunities to help better represent Pre-Heresy stuff.

It definitely is the way to go!

Yeah, Land Speeders existed during the heresy, they're mentioned in several books including Fulgrim, A Thousand Sons and Tales of Heresy I think...

It's up to you whether you'll include Librarians (Nikaea), I guess.
Multi-melta's and Plasma Cannons were rarely used by infantry during the period also.

Combi weapons are in the Marine codex, and just about every other codex in the game.

Use the regular Marines codex, or use the Chaos Marines codex if you want to use non-Chaosy yet period-appropriate things like autocannons and such.

Actually, yeah I agree with SRM, the Chaos Codex could also work quite well. I guess you could simply use both depending on your mood.

Chaplains were around at the time, most definitely. Erebus is one for a start.
But yeah, no Legion of the Damned (although I can't imagine you using them anyway! ) as they're a 2nd founding.

However, there were a lot more chapter masters due to the size of the Legions...

It depends: Chaplains were brought around after Nikea to keep the Legion's faith, for all the fat lot of good it did for half of them. Erebus and the Word Bearers were special, since at that time they wuvved the Empwah so vewy much. () Basically, if you include Librarians then fluffwise you cannot have Chaplains unless you play Word Bearers, and vice versa.

May I enquire as to how there are both Chaplain's and Librarians in the Dark Angels books (particularly the 2nd)?

Yeah! I know!

I admit, the Dark Angels books were/are a bit s**t but still...

In the 2nd book particularly, one brother was a Librarian (using powers an' all!) whilst the other was a Chaplain. Zahariel and Nemiel respectively IIRC...

Then Zahariel was quite blatantly a dirty, mean heretic with no respect for the Emprah who must be destroyed, or stuck in a room listening to one of Kelbor-Hals monlogues for a day-whichever's worse.

You think that's bad, Zahariel wasn't the only librarian, he was taught!!

Even so, forcing him to read Battle For The Abyss would be a worse punishment...

OK, it USED to make sense, BEFORE they screwed up the whole Council of Nikea and Psyker vs. Sorcerer Background.

Now it is a bit of a mess that doesn't make much sense...

You would use the current DA codex. But their armor would be black if I'm not mistaken. And as far as other marines just use your current codex. The paint scheme may not be the same. I little buddy of mine just started the 40K thing. He wanted to go with a purple black gold thing. So he and I started painting them as Pre-Heresy Emperors Children. So now he can do Chaos and SM's.

You could also use some war gear from the Chaos Marine codex as far as friendly games goes. If I'm not wrong the reason Chaos can't have storm bolters and the like is that stuff wasn't made until after the Heresy. But I've never understood why they can't get them now. I'm sure some marines have joined Chaos since then, and brought their gear with them. Unless they turned it in first...yeah right.

^ Actually that brings up an interesting question. If CSM can have Vindicators (which were developed during the Heresy by loyalist forces) why can't they have Storm Bolters? I have to assume the Vindicators used by CSM are looted, why can't they pick up a Storm Bolter as well?
