I am going to post up my 1500 point salamander list. I am contemplating whether or not to take kantor for 2,000 or another character let me know what you think.
Vulkan He'stan
10 tactical marines with MM, melta-bomb, flamer, and pod
10 tactical marines with MM, melta-bomb, flamer, and pod
8 sternguard with 8 combi-meltas, and pod
8 sternguard with pod
1 dreadnought with HF, MM, and pod
3 land speeders with MM's and HF's
Ive got about 20 points left over so I'll toss a locator beacon on a pod. So what would you recommend adding at 2000 points?

I think you should take cantor.
I'm not a fan of mixing weapons that have different roles in the same squad.... if you do the squad can never shoot to its full potential. Consider combi-flamers on the sternguard. People have this idea that flamers are only good for killing orks and what not; in truth once you have 3+ twin linked flame throwers, even terminators start dropping like flies, because you can force so many saves.
List looks good if you had another 500 points I'd consider a command squad with flamethrowers and close combat weapons. Right now you don't have any dedicated close combat squads; I think you need them because some games have a way of degenerating into gigantic melees, and it can put you in a very difficult position if you don't have a way to break them up in your favor.

@AF:
It's not that you 'force so many saves'... it's that the horde spreads out a bit to reduce those 'many' hits in the first place.

Why the 8 man squads? At 10 you can combat squad should you need to split fire. At 8, that's alot invested into just one target.
Tacticals look ok...though a combi-weapon is recommended.
Dread and Speeders are ok.
I'm just not a fan of pod lists in general, NEEDING to drop 3 pods first turn is cool and powerful, but not against someone who knows it's coming, it then becomes a gimmick.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Ah I forgot that you can only split into combat squads with 10 thanks for the reminder Sanctjud. The reason I did 8 was so that I could fit in another land speeder. As for the assaulting unit you mentioned AbaddonFidelis I was thinking of throwing in some TH/SS assaulting terminators with Kantor. I think the extra attack from Kantor will definatley make the unit, as well as the rest of the army within 12", more nasty.

Something you should do with the Sternguard is turn them into one squad of 10 and one squad of 5. Use the spare 30pts to equip a 9th Combi-Melta so they're distributed 6/3 to the 10/5, and give each of the Sternguard and Dreadnought Drop Pods a Locator Beacon. That way you can land a first way of three units of Sternguard, He'stan, and the Dreadnought, with Beacons to bring in the Tacticals in accurately, and possibly the Land Speeders if you Deep Strike them as well.

Dont really see what Kantor would bring to the table all you would get is a +1A bubble since the sternguard wont be scoring unless you skip the twinlinkedness from Vulkan...

But he wouldn't be Vulkan, now would he?
He'd be Polynikes Toughnuts of the Emperor's Glorious Ultramarines! or something. All the melta and flamers in that list could really use a good Twin-Linking.

I think its ok to use a rules set for vulkan or anyone else but use a different model and background. That lets you stay fluffy without losing your competitive edge. As long as the same model represents the same guy over and over and over again, and is a reasonable representation based on the rules provided, you should be ok.

^Which is true, but not all Gaming Groups are so... flexible with respect to fluff like that.
It is GW's line to push DIY armies, which is good, just make him WYSIWYG and you should be all set (also telling the opponent that he is using Vulkan's rules)
