Of all the non-Codex chapters, they're my favorite.

I honestly couldn't say why. I just love the idea of crusaders in space. Someday I'll start an army.

Someday.

Dark Angels are a very close second.

Great concept uunfortunatly a poor codex atm. May paint up a small detachment of them for thrills one day.

I quite like them.
Then again, my Speed Freeks have many Templar trophies. Perhaps it's those cool crosses on their armour...

Admittedly, I don't really like them. Like Sainthazard (who's number of posts has rocketed!) I'm not entirely sure why...

I guess I don't wholly believe they deserve their own Codex and they seem to be everywhere! Also, surely such a constantly fighting chapter should have significant losses?

However, I do admit I like the concept and the image is pretty cool.

Oh and we musn't forget they are a successer of the Imperial Fists who are legendary and their badass Primarch Rogal Dorn who is a badass.

I completely agree, however surely that means the Imperial Fists are awesome whilst the Black Templars are their whiny younger brother with anger management issues?

Well, wouldn't that mean a lot of marine codexes? I can understand the reasoning, but it'd be too much really.

EDIT: Whoops, misread the post. Even so, it rules out the second founding (and onwards) who may have traits unique to them.

I don't like them very much. They have a boring color scheme, since you can't throw a stone without hitting a dozen space marine armies wearing black. Also, the Space Wolves and Blood Angels are already the "assault oriented" marine armies so I see a third codex that does, essentially the same thing, as superfluous. I would much rather see the Imperial Fists, Raven Guard, Iron Hands, or Salamanders get a codex before the Templars.

I will admit that the crusading knights theme is pretty cool. I just think it should have been rolled into the regular codex SM.

I have been playing Black Templars for a couple of years now. I really enjoy the fluff and the special rules they have. However I would like to see an update with some more units to choose from in the army list.

I love their models and paint scheme, and the fluff is cool too. Never seen them win a game though, despite knowing two different people who played them.

Fluffwise? I like them.

In a game? Never seen them.

Paint scheme? More like Space Knights Hospitallers (both colours and cross).

I thought I was the only one who realized this.

They totally use the Knights Hospitaller cross, not the Templar cross, and the Knights Hospitaller were the ones who wore white and black (and red).

The Knights Templar typically wore red and white, very little black, and their cross looked like this:

Knights Hospitaller, for reference:

Actually, the Templar's cross is the "paté" cross.

And I noticed it as soon as I saw those marines a couple years ago (I'm not that old in this hobby), I sent then an "innocent" e-mail to GW but they never replied.

They're ok, but as someone pointed out the ''assault'' theme is already taken by the BA, ad black is boring.

So the only thing that sets them apart from the rest is the ''Crusading Knights'' thing, which was inspired (Read stolen) from the real world crusades.

So overall, 4/10.

Except that that's not the "cross pattée."

This is.

Which is remarkably similar to... oh look, the one I just showed you in my last post.

The Knights Templar never used the gently curving cross design, always a straight cross with fluted tips.

I like the Templars. Them being my starting and primary army may have something to do with that.

I was a little curious why a 2nd founding chapter had they're own codex, but I like the fluff and play-style of the army. Basically, I really like assault-oriented marines, but I hate the "one-themed"-ness of Wolfy wolf wolves and Bloody bloodinating bloodinators. Templars have a bit more flexibility when it comes to making "successors" and adding your own flair to the models. Their only real "theme" is the crusading knights theme, which is just a variation on the typical SM look.

I also don't see them very much; very few other people I've met play Templars, unlike C:SM, C:BA, and C:SW.

Also, the codex has aged fairly well imho (compared to DA), although it's a tad bland with only a couple good strategies left in it.

The one I posted is the primitive variation and the background is their banner's scheme (also used on the shields, wihtout the cross).

They are the coolest playable space marine race. I have always said this.

Thank god I was smart enough not to tell my friend to play them.

Their codex is very poor, but hopefully, if the rumours are true, they will get an update. Their models are already awesome, they will become nothing but godly. And their rules will be up to scratch too.

For now, wait. Their time will come.

That's the banner scheme for a lot of orders of knights in the 11th Century, and onward.

The cross may be the primitive cross pattée, but that design was never used by the Knights Templar. By Christian knights before the Knights Templar, though? Probably.

...um, yes. Because that fluted cross design is in EVERY seal. Including the one I linked earlier.

But it's not the Templar Cross.
