Can you use Daemons on square bases (I use them mainly for WFB) or do they have to be on round bases? I would like to buy the codex and try them in 40K. I am sure square would be fine for a friendly, but would they not be allowed in tournament?

40k has no "must use round base" stipulations.

It's only anal-retentive gamers who you probably wouldn't enjoy playing anyway that do.

The only base stipulation the rules have is that the models must be mounted on the bases they came with. If you are given more than one option in the box, then either base is fine and 'legal'.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I will allow it

I mounted my demons on the round bases then got the round to square move trays for War of the Ring game. Then you can use them for either.

Like Chrome said, there's no actual rule that states you cannot.

Personally, I'm 100% okay with playing against models on square bases in 40k.

I may ask you to measure the shooting in some touchier cases from a corner, since the corner-to-corner width of a squad base is exactly equal to a round base's diameter, but only in a competitive setting such as a tournament. In friendly games I got no issue either way.

I would mount them on round bases myself and do what Synnister said (I actually do the same with my Daemons).

The round are more convenient to work with overall imo.

Aren't the move trays for WotR larger than the square bases for WHFB?

I don't think you can legally use the move trays for WHFB, but I could be wrong.

They are a little big, I cut custom ones from wood, the edge of the holes need to hit one another exactly so the width of the tray is the width of n bases, where n is the number of models in the rank.

Er... Corner-to-corner, a 25mm square base is wider than a 25mm diameter round one. They're 25mm across the face, not diagonally.

The rulebook mentions that you should converse with your opponent to decide whether this is acceptable or not. I see no reason to not allow it...

You should check with your opponent if you're trying to use a different base to that supplied with the model.

Daemons come with both bases, so you can use either. There is no need to clear it with your opponent.

I'm holding them up for comparison right now and you're right, but only by (literally) a couple of millimeters. The difference is negligible.

But a lot of players may not realize that, so for the sake of avoiding an argument, you may want to just say, "Hey, FYI, these are WHFB models, I'm trying them in 40k, that's why they have the square base."

Honestly, I'd be surprised if there are actually that many players who would not know that Daemons come with square bases (they always have... the addition of round bases in the pack as well is a relatively recent development) and who would actually care.

But yeah, certainly discuss it if you think it's potentially going to be an issue.
