Hey everyone,

This is my first attempt at building a 40k army and I am looking for comments and criticisms for this list. It's Black Templar, so it is an Assault based army. Since I am new I just plan on using this army at my local gaming club for the time being, but any tournament advice would be welcome as well.

Notes:
All Crusaders/Initiates (Tactical Marines) are carrying a chainsword and bolt pistol (unless a special weapon is listed), which are free options with the Templar codex.

I realize I have a decent amount of extraneous items on my independent characters. Any advice on what to spend those points on would be great.

Army List:

Dedicated Rhino w/smoke; 374pts total:
9 Crusaders; one model with Pwr Wpn & Bolt Pistol, one with a melta gun, and frag grenades
1 Marshal; Bolt Pistol, Auspex, Teleport Homer, Melta Bombs, Term Honors, Pwr Wpn, Iron Halo

Dedicated Rhino w/smoke; 388pts total:
9 Crusaders; one model with Pwr Wpn & Bolt Pistol, one with a melta gun, and frag grenades
1 Techmarine; Servo harness, Lightening Claws, Term Honors, Melta Bombs, Teleport Homer, Auspex

Drop Pod 343pts total:
9 Crusaders; one model with Pwr Wpn & Bolt Pistol, one with a melta gun, and frag grenades total
1 Emperor's Champion with the vow "Accept any challenge..."

Deep Strike Squad 366pts total:
5 Assault Terminators each with Furious Charge; armed with lightening claws
1 Master of Sanctity (Chaplain); Term Armor, chainsword (in addition to his crozius), Holy Orb of Antioch, melta bombs

Dreadnought 145 pts; Lascannon, missle launcher, tank hunter

3 Vindicators 384pts; smoke

Thanks in advance!

Hey Rweberts, Welcome to the Black Templars, crusader!

Not a bad list for your first time. A couple of comments may help though:

The Marshal is a good choice here. Kit him out with a Pair of Lightning Claws: leadership across the board of 10, he will have 4/5 attacks already so you don't need Term Hrs, roll failed hits in cc, roll failed wounds in cc, ignore armor saves... nice. Give him Iron Halo for a 4+ Invulnerable Save and he's a beast. The rest he can do without, except maybe for the teleport homer if you have points left and you really want to deep strike something.

The Rhino with smoke is good, maybe add extra armour. Think about adding a Lascannon and Plasma gun to your Initiates... they can fire out of the Rhino's fire point with these. Frag grenades can be ditched if you have too many points.

Same thing with the Rhino and Initiates. I don't personally like the Techmarine, but that may be personal influence. Way too many points for not much imo. Your Rhino can repair itself on a roll of 6 and it will probably get popped anyway. Maybe think about adding the Emperor's Champion to this Crusader Squad.

Not a fan of Drop Pod's either. Dangerous way for a troop to land imo; they're better off in a Rhino, or a smaller unit in a Razorback. Emperor's Champion with AAC is a good and safe choice of vow.

Ok, you don't really need three HQ choices: EC+Marshal or EC+Chaplain is usually more than enough! My personal preference is for the Marshal kitted out as above. Litanies of the Chaplian is pretty much useless if the Emperor's Champ already gives you failed rolls to hit. I would ditch him.

I always like to see Assault Termies deep struck... but it's rare because it's kind of risky for such an expensive and important unit. Walk them in (but they're slow), or better still put them in an LRC. If you want to use the drop pod, why not deep strike your termies in that? I would go for LRC though, only because a minimum of 7 Assault Terminators is advisable if you want them fighting more than one round with serious opposition. A common kit-out is 5 ATs with Pair of Lightning Claws and 2 with Thunder Hammers. Furious Charge is pretty much essential.

If you're going for Dreads, it's a good idea to make them Venerable (re-roll vehicle damage) because then you can give them either Furious Charge (S+1, I+1 in CC) or Tank Hunter (+1 to AP value).

Imo Dreads aren't that great and I would probably ditch this in favour of some Land Speeders with Multimelta and Heavy Flamers. Tha would give you the fast attack option you're mssing.

Nice! That said, I would maybe swap one for a Predator Destructor with autocannon and lascannons to give you that long-range sniping option, and to dish out the pain on hordes. If you have points left over, some people say Power of the Machine Spirit on your heavy support is essential, some don't. Personally I always take it when I can.

Hope all that helps a little.

Good luck crusader!

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely incorporate some of it into the army, especially the landspeeders. I overlooked them before because of their weak armor, but I think they could be useful for the strategies I want to play. Cheers!
