I put together this diorama for the P3 Grandmasters competition at GenCon. He was awarded a silver medal.

By the way, I've put him up on CMON if you care to vote.

Overall, I was pretty pleased with how he turned out. But don't take my word for it:

Looks great, and congrats on winning the silver!

You managed a really natural pose with Pendrake and the diorama fits with the character's story perfectly. The color choices used throughout the piece really lend a feeling of being underground and in the dark. You did a wonderful job bringing one of the Iron Kingdom's most colorful characters to life. Two thumbs up for the badass-wandering-scholar that is Viktor Pendrake!

Looks great!

Can someone give a quick synopsis of what we're looking at though, for the Warmachine/Iron Kingdom ignorant amongst us? (Me, primarily!)

Sure.

Viktor Pendrake is an adventuring biologist- think Indiana Jones only a biologist instead of an archeologist.

What we have here is Pendrake examining a half dissected desert hydra (one of Pendrake's favorite finds).

Since you probably don't know the source minis- Pendrake's upper body, and arms up to his wrists are Warmachine minis. Pendrake's lower body, hands and the rest of the diorama is made from Green and Grey stuff (there isn't a desert hydra mini).

I did use some Skarath pieces as a sort of armature for the hydra, so there's a little bit more metal there.

Absolutely fantastic OSL. When I can't tell if what I'm seeing is caused by natural light or paint, you're doing something right. I can't even begin to fathom how you managed to apply an even gradient of warm->cooler "light" onto surfaces so uneven and without totally masking their base colors. Great stuff!

Thank you.

My wife helps me out by critiquing my painting (quite a bit) and the standard she uses is usually "Can I tell that this is painted?"

Of course, when I talked to Ron Cruzie (P3 judge) about this piece, it became clear that he uses pretty much the same standard, and is just a little more harsh about it.

I'll definitely have something new to enter next year, though.
