Hello Dakka people,

I'm collecting my own custom, renegade [but still loyal] space marine chapter

Would I be able to use an older SM codex [I also have the 3rd ed codex] for my battles, since they aren't loyalists?

The general assumption is that players should by default use the most current version of the codex.

That being said, if you ok it with your opponent it isn't really a problem to use an older book, although there would be some rules you would need to update to suit the current edition... and obviously you would miss out on all of the newer toys and special rules.

Come up with viable lists for both the current codex and the one you want to use.

When you play, ask your opponent if he/she minds you using an older codex, and explain why.

If he/she objects, use the v5 codex.

Simple, and covers all your options.

Thanks man , but do you think they would accept that in tournaments?

In a more tightly-run tournament, the rules package would include a list of the allowed codex for that event. This would generally include only the most recent versions of each codex.

In a less formal event, particularly a small store-run affair, you might get away with using an older codex if you discuss it with the TO... but I wouldn't count on it.

Yupp, dont plan on being able to run from an outdated codex, but ask, its always worth asking.
