Subject: Ork deffkopta bombing run?

Was wondering how well a small squad of koptas with big bombs fair on a first turn bomb run.
We all know the ussual set up of a kopta with buzz saw and rokkits are get to take down some armor first turn. But what about a small squad of koptas with shootas and big bombs? Say a a unit of 2 or 3 with bombs. Then do the ussual turbo boost in the scout phase to set up for a bomb run. Then fly over a juice target or a pesky back field infantry unit and put some hurt on them first turn if not wipe them out.
The str is only 4, ap 5 yes but its a big pie plate plus it only scatters d6 as well as there being more then one of them ontop of the big shootas if they didnt turbo boost to drop said bombs.
Anyone tried this? work out well at all?

I have seen it done with one Kopta, it droped it's bomb on a squad of marines, scattered off them and did nothing. the next turn the Kopta was utterly destroyed by the bolter fire from the marines it had tryed to bomb. Against a large unit in a hoard army ie orks or nids it might work as it would still cause damage with scatter. Otherwise go for the standerd buzz saw/rokkit launcha set up.

It's not worth it. Too expensive and only works moderately vs hordes where you may get lots of hits.
But realistically, how often does your deff kopta get the opportunity to fly over a squad of 10 models?

The only time I would suggest taking a single deffkopta with a big bomb is if you were facing another ork player, or some other army who won't be able to save against an AP 5.

I agree in sticking with the buzzsaw/rokkit set up!
I've only had the bombing run work a few times, and even then only against an army with alot of pieces! Its tough to do against the marines (but not impossible) but versus lets say the Tyranids is works wonders. I even lucked out against the Tau one time but he's a quick learner LOL
It's a tac that can work, just be sure you know what your going up against before deploying it & you'll want at least 3 of em!
Experiment and enjoy

I dislike it as a tactic.
For me, Deffkoptas are ideally used for flanking things and harassing tanks and such using their scout rule. From experience, turbo-boosting over things and dropping bombs on them wasn't anywhere near as useful.
But then again, I run a Speed Freek army, so perhaps it works better with other setups.

The biggest problem this tactic faces is that due to the low ap value of the bomm you can only take out cheap units. And since dethkoptas themselves aren't cheap (especialy if you give them toys) it is difficult to justify the points unless they are silencing heavy weapons by engaging them in combat, or killing tanks.

- The face of an opponent when you lose five dozen models and say "that's it?", priceless. |
