Dear Dakka Dakka,

Troops with spears fight in 3 ranks if they are not in a horde if they don't charge. If they do charge, then they only fight with 2 ranks. High Elf Spearmen and Seaguard have "Martial Prowess" which is a special rule that allows them to fight in an extra rank.

My question is this, with Martial Prowess, do High Elf Spearmen and Seaguard attack with 3 ranks on the charge?

According to the BRB errata, Fights with extra ranks is indeed a stackable USR, so if you can stack up them special conditions you can get 3 or more ranks to fight.

For example the spearmen you mentioned in a horde formation would get to fight in 5 ranks: front – by default, second – supporting attacks, third – for being a Horde, fourth – for having spears and fifth – for Martial Prowess.

Right, sorry, I should have mentioned that I knew about the whole 5 ranks thing with Horde, Martial Prowess, Spears, Supporting attacks, and front rank attacks.

So, then if extra ranks USR stacks they can attack with 3 ranks on the charge if they are not a horde and they can attack with 4 ranks on the charge with a horde?

Because the spear section under the weapons section states they can only attack with 2 ranks on the charge instead of 3 for a normal unit. I'm assuming that the bonus for having spears is lost when you charge regardless if you are high elves or not.

The text in the spear rules (BRB page 91) clearly states it gives the Fights in extra rank USR.

I'm back in my room now with my rule books lol. Okay, on page 91. Spear (foot) there is an * next to the USR Fight in Extra Ranks that says, "Does not apply on a turn in which the model charged."

Yup on the charge you get only two ranks (3 if a horde).

Martial prowess says that elves with spears may fight with an extra rank than normal. Normal being 2 on the charge, 3 every other time. Ergo, spearelves fight 3 on the charge, 4 else (+1 if Horded, per usual).

Ahh so Martial Prowless is like horde it gives extra supporting attacks rather tha the Fights in extra rank USR

Yes. Also USRs do not start, appart from Extra Attack, which was FAQ'd to allows multiple instances to stack (from frenzy and an additional hand weapons for example).

The FAQ gave Extra rank the ability to stack as well.
