How did you choose your army?
What are the strong and weak points you feel related to the army you are playing?
I like the look of Eldar and also the idea of playing with Space Elves
I find that they don't really have a MEQ unless you invest more points, so they feel fragile. But I still love the idea of them.

I chose my 1st army due to irony.
My surname is Witchell.
My 1st army was Witch Hunters.
Allow my main army is now Marines as I baught them to ally with my WH at first and then they just developed into an army I liked and decided to use more.
I have Eldar too and got them as i wanted a different plastyle.

I origionally played SM when I was learning long long ago because I was poor and they came in the box.
After getting the feel of the game I went to IG.
This was 15 years ago. Guard sucked, and half their vehicles weren't even available as models.
I quickley hit up eldar because... well they look awesome, they are extremely good at switching up what kind of game you want to play, and generally, they are maneuverable enough that I get to call the shots on the direction a game takes, while picking away at my opponent's weaknesses with precision use of each unit... Banshees versus MEQ, dragons versus armor, harlies versus anything, warlocks versus MC, etc. Plus nowadays they trump all psykers with the runes of warding, hose all LR spam with mounted dragons, beat the waiting game with an Autarch. The only gripe I have is that Guardians suck for their cost, and Phoenix Lords should have an Invul save, for how ridiculous they cost.
But mostly. They just look awesome.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.
I am Red/White Take The Magic Dual Colour Test - Beta today! Created with Rum and Monkey's Personality Test Generator.I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly. |

I started with SM, about 5 years ago, thinking they were robots >_>
They weren't so I moved onto my proper first army, Eldar, because I liked the tanks. But, mostly because Necrons, who have a cool concept, look pretty boring. I was going to go with Dark Eldar as I like the Raiders more than most Eldar vehicles but much of the other models looked pretty bad. Although I supose I could mix them up with Eldar for Eldar Pirate goodness. As for WH I got as far as a Canoness, Immolator and 20 Battle Sisters before the price increase drove me away >_>

Imperial Fists are yellow, I liked the idea of doing yellow marines more than I did going back to Blood Angels (having had a 2nd Ed. army of them many moons ago).
Nurgle is my other love, primarily because some of the models (FW in particular) are brilliant but also because painting decay is really quite rewarding.
Vostroyans will be next, purely because Space Cossacks can only be brilliant fun and IG have one of the widest vehicle ranges.

I started out Imperial because I just thought Steel Legion were awesome, then the money hit me, $35 per 10 people, and not many variants? No thanks.
Then I went on the Eldar, and Chaos Marines.
I just disliked Eldar, not the way I play I don't like their models a lot, nothing really appealed to me. (My friend gave me his army since he quit).
Choas were actually awesome, I loved most of their models, but I just liked loyalist marines to much, and since I only had 1k points worth I switched over to SM.
So now I'm playing Space Marines (Which I actually love). It's deffinatly hard (For me at least) to pick an army, and stick with it for years, my advice to you is to buy like 500 points worth of Eldar if thats really what you think you want to play, and just try them out to see if you like them (Paint them too). Then, if you do, you already have 500 points of them that are painted, and playable!

Bwahahaha. Look at my signature to see how much of a treasonous bastard I am. I could give you reasons for each individual army I play, and I could give you reasons for each individual army I plan to play (i.e. all of them).
But the quick and dirty is such:
First and foremost, I play Tau, because 1) I absolutely love their models, especially their vehicles, 2) their tactics appeal to me (high mobility, spectacular shooting, nonexistant close combat prowess), 3) their fluff is some of the most... subtle of any faction in the 40k universe. On the surface, they appear to be your average happy-go-lucky unafflicted-by-the-warp optimistic Space Communists, but the undertones of dictatorship, brainwashing, selective sterilization and extreme imperialism make them much more grimdark than most people realize, and I like that. I like that people think I'm playing the good guys.
Second, I play Orks, because they're just so damn much fun. They're competitive, don't require a whole lot of thought to play (on those days when I just wanna start krumpin'), have some really kickass looking models (love the ramshackle look), and are generally hilarious (their codex has been one of my favorite reads in the 40k universe).
But beyond that, single-sentence reasons for each other army I play:
Daemons, because the immortal manipulative chessmaster magnificent bastard Tzeentch appeals to my love of daggers in the dark and shadowy schemes.
Space Marines, because they were my first army, but honestly not my favorite to play - still, their thoroughly varied tabletop tactics make them extremely flexible, and every single battle is different with them, which makes it fun.
Deathwatch, because while they're played as vanilla Marines, among the Imperial factions, the Inquisition, and more specifically, the Deathwatch, has some of my all-time favorite fluff, and the coolest looking gear - hence my themed (though not super competitive) Deathwatch army.
Finally, Necrons, because while I don't love the fluff, I do love the models, and I like the general idea of undying omnicidal zombie robots who get back up when you kill them and really have no desire but to destroy all life down to the last bacterium in the universe.
I'm also in the planning stages of a jetbike Eldar army (awesome models, awesome fluff), an IG Armored Cav regiment (awesome models, even more awesome fluff), a Dark Eldar raider detachment (crappy models, but awesome fluff, which is why I'm waiting), and, well... those last two in my signature, which only mean something to you if you get the reference.

I inherited Eldar from my father, so yeah.
I like the fluff and minis for IG, plus I love to listen to my Grandpas War stories.
And for orks? one day I just said,"I wanna paint some orks" and i bought some. End of story.

Stealthy Dark Angels Scout with Shotgun

I started out with DA, mainly due to a friend gifting the starter paint set to my brother. When we looked at the codex for SM, DA just seemed like the coolest paint scheme (that and you get Dark Angels Green in the paint set).
Since then I have tried to read up on all the fluff for them and have grown to love them over the last 10 years. Such a good back story still makes them good in my eyes even if the table top prowess is lacking a bit in this edition.
But now I have moved on to Nids. I had always wanted to do an all infantry Imperial Guard army, but the cost of the models just put me off. But for about the same price i can get lots more little critters that will eventually bite their faces off.

Started with Eldar, copying a friend, then Chaos copying a friend, then I split off from that bastard and tried to get a 13th company of the wulfen going. Never had the cash for it and now the rules are quite... useless. Starting up again I went for Ork because I like them as the proverbial Mad-Max-is-drunk,-violent,-and-flipping-off-the-universe-while-taking-a-leak-on-a-pile-of-dead-babies faction of the game...
Kinda like Mel Gibson minus the.... nothing actually...
Liked BA for a bit and got a few things going but then I reread that filler codex and wept, then the new codex came out and I wept at all THE BLAAAAAHD on everything. Currently liking Imperial Fists for being doggedly determined and being one of the nicer SM Chapters, being a Second Founding that gets overlooked now, and while being nice, lacks those creepy racial undertones with the Salamanders or the cheeze inherent to a Vulkan List.

Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...
Lets settle this in the arena http://pantsformer.mybrute.com |

I started space marines since I was in the army and the rhino looked like the M113 APC which I thought was pretty cool even though i hate that vehicle in real life. I also heard they were a noob army that was good to start off with. My plan was to learn the game with a small number of space marines and then branch out to a different army later. When I started playing I found the SM were a lot less durable than people make them out to be. Most people who would go up against me were not worried about beating SM and I started to get the feeling that SM were underpowered and not that easy to come up with a well balanced list. I then decided it would be more challenging to be an awesome space marine player and so I set out to challenge my self to get really good with the space marines and never branched out to a different army.

I chose Sisters because I liked the concept of elite human soldiers in power armor (Marines don't count, as they are not human), especially ones whom kept themselves to such a strict level of purity (in all senses of the term-- from biological, to spiritual, to ideological, etc) rather than just being stereotypical "grunt kill smash fart belch" type soldiers, which are kinda dull and overdone by the xbox crowd.
I chose Guard for a similar reason-- being common human soldiers fighting against the supernatural, pitiles enemies of 40k, they're the epitome of awesome in 40k. That, and nothing is more iconic than Guard holding the line as an Ork WAAAGH! charges forth into melee.
Which brings me to Orks. Their fluff is extremely interesting-- their social patterns, their thought processes, their technology, and so on. And they fit the barbarians at the gates theme extremely damn well.
|
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

My first 'love' (Warhammer-wise!!) was Eldar, I loved their fluff, play-style and image! However, I found I just couldn't paint them with any satisfaction, so although I've always remained interested in them and they are my favourite race, I simply don't collect them. We just weren't meant to be!
Then I saw a portrait picture of a Space Wolf and although I preferred the overall cloaked image of the Dark Angels, I thought I just had to collect them!
And now, I'm very happy that I did, I can enjoy painting them (as much as I enjoy painting), I love their fluff (they're truly the unorthodox good guys) and their play-style.
and my chaos space marines are just a bit on the side...
