Well, there is a reason for me.
but why do you guys give tanks their pintle mounted weapons/otherwise?
I give them to my vindicator, I feel if there is a 15% chance that if they pull out they wuill survive, then there is an even bigger chance if they have weapons to defend themselves.

I give my rhino a pintle-mounted storm bolter so it can actualy do something when it's not transporting. ie shoot at small and lightly armed groups such as grechin.

Leftover points only - for me the transports are there to get from A to be and protection - while another 2 St4 shots would be nice, or a Krak missile to hit an enemy vehicle in the flank with, I seem to always find a better use for those 10 pts

Lets it take another hit before damage gets converted to wrecked.
Quite handy if people are chipping away at it with glancing hits.

Rhinos get storm bolters as standard gear as well so you can have up to two on a rhino.

pintle-mounted special or combi weapons are fine. there's no reason to buy a pintle mounted bolter though.... bolters are such silly and ineffective guns I'm having a hard time thinking of any situation where you'd actually want to pay for one....

If I knew I was going to be facing a horde force like a Green Tide, GribbleNids I'd spare a few points here and there.
Bolters clean up against forward-moving models like Boyz, Genestealers, and Gaunts. 20 or 30 points won't buy you much else in the Marine Codex beyond a few of these upgrades, after all of your full units are kitted out.
Against MEQ armies...no way. Bolters are for killing lesser beings, not Marines.

PMSB on SoB rhinos + blessed ammo is awesome.
Failing that, honestly, the best justification for them I've been able to come up with is to keep the second weapon destroyed from becoming an immobilized, but that's a minimal threat unless stuff is glancing you to death. If you had said Heavy Stubbers on Chimeras, well, then I might have said it's a good idea, if you have the points. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oooh, oooh! I got one! For an extra AA weapon in Apoc!

Although you titled the thread with storm Bolters your post refers to all Pintle weapons so...
On my Chimeras, and some select other builds I often-always take Pintle Heavy Stubbers.
If I had an extra 10 points I might take them on Dakka Preds.
I always take one on my LRC.
My Slogging Assault Cannon Dreads Keep their Storm bolters(but my MM dread exchanges it for a Heavy Flamer, and a Las/Auto Cannon Dread would take a Missile Launcher).
My SW Razor backs do not have them; but only due to point restrictions.

To have a Demolisher Cannon-less, immobilized Vindicator not be entirely useless. Either another unit shooting/assaulting the Vindicator is wasted to possibly kill it, or it sits there with a 24" threat radius the rest of the game. Had that happen in a game I watched, first turn the Vindicator lost the cannon and became immobilized. It was ignored for almost the entire rest of the game while it proceeded to make the points back with just the storm bolter.

I give a MM to my LRC so it can use POTMS and use the MM to target something else so that it's shot isn't wasted on say boyz. Instead it will fry a trukk (not like I need 2d6 and +1 to damage to kill it) or some other vehicle.

I never go with the extra storm bolter but I will use mass hunter killers on occasion. They do the same thing as the storm bolter letting you live a little longer if someone is trying to glance you to death. But unlike the storm bolter there are situations that pop up where an unlimited range str 8 ap 3 shot comes in handy to the point where it might turn the tide of battle.
